Poorly dog

Sorry not sure when the best place to post to ask for advice was but a bit desperate now

On Thursday I had to rush my dog into the vets at about midday, having been totally fine 5 minutes before (ran up and down the driveway chasing the telehandler) he had got back in the yard and was violently shaking (seizure). I took him straight to the vets and got there half 25 minutes later (don't ask how many speed limits I broke but no one died anyway...).
Upon arrival he had diazapan to try and control the fitting and I gave him some charcoal and then after speaking to the vet had to leave. He's obviously eaten something but we aren't sure what. Neither me nor the vet thinks it's rat poison as the only rat poison on farm is in the boot of my car still sealed and I haven't put any out since November, he also didn't have any microbleeding around the gumline, and it doesn't normally cause seizures

Vet is going down the line of general toxin since we aren't sure what he has had but did say he's presenting like ivermectin poisoning. He couldn't have got that from me as I don't have any hear is the only strange part again.

He had to be sedated Thursday afternoon under general as the diazapan hadn't worked and then they woke him up but he started fitting again so they put him on a drip with sedative in which stopped the seizures. Anyway were now approaching the 48 hour mark and they can't wean him off the sedative as he just starts fitting. He's down to 8 units instead of 20 at peak and 12 when I saw him last night. The vet is going to try and wean him completely again this morning but when she last tried he started fitting again. She has said that if she can't get him off it by after lunch things aren't looking good.

Has anyone got any ideas at all? Very much grasping at straws here but have a feeling I'm about to lose my best friend 😞

I'm sorry to hear your dog isn't well.

Had the vet considered the possibility of a spinal/brain tumor. My fathers little dog got that and he started to fit when he got excited, you could tell what was about to happen because he would salivate just before. Slightly different though because he was getting lost in corners in the house.

has he eaten anything fungal like poisonous mushrooms do you think?

I'll ask about tumours when they ring me back, sounds obvious now you've said it. Haven't thought about mushrooms but no reason to rule them out, he doesn't normally have a massive appetite though and isn't like him to go sifting for food, he's good at catching rats and rabbits but never eats them, just sort of kills and leaves them

Had a young bitch start fitting after she laid in some spilt dysect. Overnight in the vets on a drip and sedatives sorted her out.

Any chance your dog could have had access to some sort of pour on?

What age is the dog?
Neighbours collie x lab had a massive seizure in front of us back in the summer, it was 12 mind and made a good recovery for a few weeks and then eventually the seizures wouldn’t stop a few weeks later.

I’ll ask if the vets found what was wrong?

Bee/wasp sting a possibility?

Had similar about 2 weeks ago. Had 2 seizures then took her to the vet, had bloods done , bloods all over the place. Conclusion of the bloods was either she epileptic or had a brain tumour, she was blind and fitting at the vet. They said to try her on some tablets of pexlon as a last resort and take her home too see what happened over the next 3 days. had about 5 seizures over the next 2 days and started improving on day 3. She seems 100 percent now but time will tell. They didnt mention anything about toxins at the time but it may well be something to think about.

Very worrying. The brain is so complex. Seen that a few times but that was back in the days when they added stuff (Angine?) to bread to stop it going stale. I once saw a pup that had got a bad shock from a main electric fence have fits. It's not nice.

Had a couple of dogs nearly die from poisoning from kettox bolus for dairy cows that came in some silage bales I bought. Orange plastic tubes with 2 plastic wings at one end. Apparently they're deadly to dogs but fine for cows

not nice, we lost a young collie, ate a rat full of poison, started coughing funny, straight to vets, drip, vitamin K etc.
But you have to do what's right for your dog, not for you, and it's very difficult, lets hope she pulls through.
One piece of advise, l will say, if at all possible, get your farm vet involved asap, with ours, and another injured dog, farm vets involvement, led to a huge reduction in the bill, not the point, but it does help.

Any progress? I had a labrador who when young collapsed and fitted a few times. Like your dog she had been running about daft before. Then fell over as if paralysed, then fitted.
Simple as - hypoglycemia. She was getting plenty to eat but still not enough. Had to change to 3 meals a day. Sorted.
I doubt blood work would have shown it, she wasn't bad enough to be clinically diabetic I think.
Still make sure vet checks blood sugar levels.

Thanks everyone, bit of an update, he's home! Really poorly still but they managed to get him off the sedative without him having continuous seizures which is brilliant, especially as I was expecting to be told around lunch that there was nothing more they could do!

The issue now is trying to work out if he's going to have any quality of life, currently he can't walk and struggles to do much unless he's lying down.
However, when I picked him up he got really excited, was wagging his tail and trying to walk and run around - was almost standing unaided, prior to then the only thing he had done was growl at the nurses (doesn't like women or vets very much) 🤣
I put him in the car on the seat and he moved himself into the foot well which was always where he liked to ride in the car as he does get car sick. He then started rooting around my lunch box and was trying to eat a packet of crisps so was hungry!

Got him home gave him a bit of food (not much as didn't want to over do it!) And he's now asleep. Hopefully time will sort him 🤞
Still no further to finding out what did it though

Good that he's home and obviously delighted to see you.

Has he been near the beach? There are stories down 'yer about some really toxic white fatty stuff that the ships discharge after washing their cargo holds out, and it ends up on the sand. Toxic to dogs and several have died. (It's illegal to wash out like this, but out at sea, who knows? then it gets carried in on the tide.)

Certainly a pour on cattle / sheep wormer type product can be fatal to dogs. I'm thinking hooman PPE, rubber gloves etc, discarded, rather than direct exposure.

Fingers crossed for him.... :)

Only places he's been is on my farm or dad's so atleast limited exposure to foreign substances
The only thing I've used recently is a flukeicide when I dried 2 cows off on Wednesday but I just can't see that he would have consumed any of it 🤔

This is first time I've heard an explanation for these cases it was unknown last I could find out about it 😕
