Interesting how the headlands have fared better. I'll bet the consolidation on them was better which helped the crop retain moisture. I certainly wished I'd double rolled some of mine. Anywhere I had pure chalk or a bit of clay and it was lumpy or puffy the crop has not done as well.

When August & September are normally the wettest months of the year I've never had these problems - it's usually slugs instead. At least pellets still work!

That “picture framed” effect is not un common in OSR

I think it demonstrates the real problem this season - lack of moisture after drilling meaning slow development and a resulting big window for CSFB

solution - don’t plant until we have conditions where the crop will grow away fast, double roll if dry, use seedbed fert and retain moisture (why have no till crops seemly been less effected this year ?)

Well I’ve just written off 36ha of OSR that looked ok a month ago. Larvae in the base of the stem, it’s fecked.

Looking for a dd disc drill to slot sp barley in early next week.

Very large G+T’s for me tonight, well peed off.

No I didn’t, it’s been in doubt since January and decided not to do anything. Was clean enough to risk but the hardest part has been deciding to rip it up

The answer is clearly not organic but equally it’s clearly not conventional as we know it either

Agree, there are lessons to be learned from organic, a lot are the lessons they have learned through history, and then tailor them to fit whatever system works best for you.
