Sheep attestation

Sorry if this has already been discussed. We went to a seminar in the summer with our vets who told us about the upcoming sheep attestation and small farm productivity grant for worms in sheep. We were advised to apply for this and double it up with the sheep attestation. The grant would cover the cost of the attestation and FEC experiment with a nice little sum left over. I believe the grant is around £460? Well I’ve just had the vets bill……… £458 plus the upcoming fee for the second egg count. Which will be another £48 plus vat. This means I’ll actually be around £50 out of pocket. Is that correct? Should I be questioning it? Or is it a scam where they’ve all had my trousers down??

I’ve said it before on here and I’ll say it again. Some of you have some proper crooked vets. My certificate cost £26 from our vets, and they laminated it at that too.
but ours never used to be like it.

I used to have nothing but respect for all our vets and be in awe of them tbh, now they just seem on the make.
for a start why do they need such fancy cars to drive around in? when i started out and was introduced business wise to the same practice as Dad and Grandad had used , the main vet had a Renault 5 ,and wore an old worn out barbour jacket , He was the best Sheep vet i have ever known.
a conversation with him or any of the others for that matter made you feel a bit happier even if the ewe lamb or pig did die they seemed to have a calming influence over livestock farming . certainly helped in more ways than one.

Well I’ve definitely been looking at options today. Someone said to me I should have asked how much before. But your vets your vet. It’s not like getting quotes off builders. I just assumed it would be a flat rate for everyone. What’s worse they did my uncle the same afternoon (next door farm) no discount for doubling up. His bill is the same so that’s literally £1000 for an afternoons paper pushing with no travelling involved!🙄

Pricing was going that way here a few years ago. One of the corporates bought our old vet practise out (and they weren’t cheap to start with)
2 of the best vets there fell out with the management and set up their own practise (along with a rival corporate as a third partner) right in the middle of the same area. And they slashed costs dramatically. The other practise have had to sharpen up since but it did them no favours when a lot of folk realised just how far we’d been getting ripped for the previous few years

Welcome to agricultural support.
You should now be very grateful for the £508 worth of service you got for £50 and applaud the government for it's support.
There are very few 'support payments' which actually support farming.

You have to ask the question, is that a bad thing?

You've managed a year without needing any antibiotics - a thing we're told we should be cutting down on.

The whole thing then becomes an oxymoron - you farm well and cut antibiotic use, thus meeting a government aspiration, so don't need a vet but they can't issue a VAN, which has become a government requirement, because you've managed to meet a government aspiration.

The world's gone mad, issuing regulation after regulation until it finally disappears up it's own ar$ehole.

We have used antibiotics, to be honest not much , I think off the top of my head we had two alamycin and one zactran They have to see us once a year whether we need anything or not was my understanding
But I get what your saying and agree with you

Change your vets...
The necessary FEC is a pooled sample with a retest after treatment to see if the wormer has worked
Via Biobest this is £90 all in
£346 left for paying a vet and any other bloods required
You vet is interpreting the rules incorrectly or just ripping you off

I had a conversation with Defra about this last week pointed out that the £90 Biobest tests could be £30 from MVFs. I also got my attestation off the back of the farm visit from the welfare grant. Costing me £25 but as the vet visit was in July it is back dated so £25 for 6 months!

The point of the VAN is that the EU want to see that a vet has been on farm at least annually, so that they can attest that there are no infectious diseases. It is a requirement for any part of the carcass to be exported to EU markets, nothing to do with our government.

Separately, the vet's governing body requires that the vet actually sees your stock at least annually, as they can only legally prescribe drugs to animals that are 'under their care'. To be fair, an annual visit is a pretty relaxed interpretation of either requirement.
