Shorthorns?

I think I'm right in thinking that the Shorthorns have closed their herd book ie you can only register a calf with the society if it is by a bull already registered as a shorthorn. Fairly local herd reckons that a 75%DS 25%Hol are their best cows. They are gaining popularity in this area and Leek now has a special sale.
Think for most shows a shorthorn has to be minimum 25% shorthorn, whereas Ayrshire is 51% Ayrshire!

Looking at the back pedigree, the cow`s sire Lifton David is probably as near as you can get to NDS genetics whereas on the Dam`s side the genetics are more modern, with a touch of aussie Illawarra

Result an impressive cow though not as much milk as her dam

87.5% and 100% two bulls I’ve used this time butterfat a bit low on dams but decent yield and protein

Would be interested to see how she progresses, nice figures coming out of her.

Definitely interested in the breed, so will try and track down some stock.

There's a sale at Penrith on the 28th of May that will have some high purity dairy shorthorn. There's also 3 herds with small numbers of NDS in north Lancashire that I know of, where are you based?
The current highest PLI shorthorn bull available from shorthorn sires uk is Lifton David, he's 75% NDS 25% shorthorn, no holstein blood etc. He's good on milk solids and health traits so would suit a simple system producing cheese.

Lack of data on udder quality ? That might be an issue looking at the back pedigree ?
Yes, but if you're after NDS there'll be few bulls that contain a decent amount in the pedigree and have any figures at all. He has at least some. And like I said milk solids and health traits are something he has, I think 80+% reliability from memory. I wouldn't recommend him if high yielding show cows are your want but I didn't get that impression from the original post.
I must say I've only been breeding pedigree cattle 5 minutes so take my opinions with a pinch salt.

Not too far from Preston, where are these herds based?
Might have to have a ride up to Penrith

I'd agree with the 75-25 proportion, but one fairly local to you herd, had possibly their most prominent period after buying a R+W Holstein and using him heavily!

correct heifers from 1000 - 2400 if i remember correct. The top price heifer was my pick from the catalogue. same as most sales some more reasonable than others.
Some of David dents at 1800 were a bit cheap considering what they have been making and price of dairy cows, watching the video.
