the narrow mindedness is shocking just because a lot of your sub is factored into rent you want rid of them,

now imagine you were personally recieve a ban and no subsidies next year clive and your neighbours do, they would simply outbid you for land, you would be at a competitive disadvantage, you would ask can i have some subsidies please and the answer would be no, sell up, dont be so self entitled!

you are then in the same situation as UK beef farmers

I can’t recall were I saw that and I might have the volume wrong as it’s just from memory but the jist was we imported about as much as we exported which seemed mad to me at the time

NZ mainly exports prime cuts and legs to the UK, to the tune of around 55,000 tons. The EU exports just about 23,000 tons our way, both mainly when the UK price is highest.
The UK exports about 75,000 tons to the EU, which is around 90% of our total exports.

A hard brexit would likely leave a surplus of between 30,000 and 50,000 tons on the UK market, depending on how NZ allocates or re-allocates its import quota to the EU [including the UK].
How do you think that would effect the UK sheep market, even if we found alternative markets eventually?

Would one of the sheep men care to comment ?? That seems a very dodgy statistic ? If its true then happy days the uk wont need to export lamb but somehow i doubt it . If its not true then Clive needs to pay more attention in class !

Actually looks like we import 90-100k t total sheep meat and export about 100k t

In recent years, sheep meat exports have fluctuated between 90,000 and 100,000 tonnes, equating to around a third of production

The UK currently imports around a third of the sheep meat it consumes, or around 100,000 tonnes annually.

Madness ! environmental vandalism and and a situation that results in our producers needing subs to stay in business

@Clive, there's lamb and there's lamb, and you can't stack up a thousand tonnes in a warehouse to keep for the slow season, like you can with grain. Some times of the year we export a chunk, and other times we import. Some lamb meat is a part of the animal that the UK consumer won't eat, and we export that. Sometimes the UK consumer wants more of another cut, and that gets imported.

There wont be a tariff. Have faith , Boris will get a deal on the last hour , they only playing hard ball because they think remainers can still stop Brexit ,

You have no knowledge of that, and are just guessing. Frankly, the body of evidence suggests that you're likely to be proven 100% wrong. I hope not, for all the industry's sake, but if you don't mind I'll not go basing business decisions on your optimistic uninformed opinions.

You can, and some do, but the evidence suggests that the majority of supermarket consumers want fresh lamb.

well things need to change - what we have right ow doesn't wprk for producer, consume and especially the environment

using Lamb as an example we can produce every bit we want / need in this country if economic circumstance (imports) are controlled better - doing so makes far more sense than subs

same goes for milling wheat and oilseed etc

the biggest victim of all right now is the planet not us farmers

I mean surely anyone can sit back and think about the true madness and climate cost of NZ lamb on a Welsh supermarket shelf !!
