Our vet insists that soya is a must for the best colostrum quality. We’ve fed this as a straight for 3 years and now manage without spectam.

No soya is grown for the oil for humans , I’m only using the husk that’s surplus to their requirements.

I'm well aware of the economics of soya production. I meant financial sustainability of another bought in input.

Sorry, the soya replaces sheep cake as long as I can make silage of 11 me. 100 grams per lamb due per ewe, plus minerals once a day.

Hygiene is perfect , no expense spared deep litter clean straw all lambs monitored for getting colostrum early, pens all spotless, the only thing that has changed is the lack of spectam. Not usually negative on here but it’s disappointing to have had 3 so far. Ok so I appreciate some say I’m dumb but my initial post was to what I can do to help this situation. As stated my vet was perfectly happy to sell me the stuff. Will
Monitor the situation over the lambing and report back if only to help others possible facing s similar situation.

Its probably just coincidence that you've lost 3 lambs that haven't had spectam, it sounds like you're doing everything else right, my post about good colostrum wasn't criticism in any way, just pointing out if you're colostrum is good I'm sure you'll have nothing to worry about and you'll find out you can manage without spectam

How many are you lambing?? As has already been said three might not be anything to worry about if it’s just one of those things, unless your only lambing six sheep an their all having one!! If your lambing six hundred an you only lose three then you need an award, face book page, mention in national farming press, an your own clothes range

Watery mouth prevention

Last 25 years we have used Terramycin pills for prevention of watery mouth, all triplets and weaker lambs but vet can’t source these now so has given us a 100ml bottle of spectam but due to the shortage we have to keep taking it back to get it refilled !!!!! This we be a pain as we have more...

Can you cure them, ive had a few this time cos of no spectam, ive cured them with a half ml betamox injected and a ml down throat.

Ones I had watery mouth really bad and the vet gave me injectable spectam, that saved them all but I haven’t even heard of it since.

Hasn’t the ab job changed in the last 10 years, used to give all ewes aly before lambing, lambs all got spectam and 1ml amoxipen on turn out. Just give the triplet and small week lambs spectam now and will give that you when my bottle runs out.

Couldn't remember it's name last night, checked this morning for you;

SpectoGuard is the name of the stuff my vet gave me, they said it is just the same as Spectam.

I get the feeling you are making me out to be a twit, it’s was happy supplied by my vet for all that time, what did they think I was doing with it ? Washing my windows ?
