Store lamb management

Sheep dip is the last 100% effective chemical for external parisite's with NO RESISTANCE...... Hell we don't wanna loose it & sheep showers are the major threat to this I'm afraid.......

probably right , these days dip is not so effective anymore,

Seemingly so. I used to run everything through a netter twice a year for blowfly control, and it worked a treat (& only cost 15-30p/had at the time). I only stopped as the cover dropped so that they weren’t protected for as long as the withdrawal period on the OP. Used Clik ever since.

Seems like I've caused a stir up on the scab subject 😂

In the last 10 years we haven't had scab on this farm, whether that is down to buying the right lambs, coincidentally we switched marts around this time and haven't looked back! Or our management of them, which has always (well the last 10 years at least) been a single injection of dectomax upon arrival. And all in, all out system with 5 or 6 months sheep free.

Spoke to my vet on Friday and the lambs are now away on keep, fingers crossed 🤞

You have had a good run.

Market choice is a big factor. People know which ones are relaxed about the job and take suspect lambs which infects 1000 others through out the day.

Markets have an impossible task to be fair. We have a separate farm for all out store stock and have had numerous cases of scab, it seems to be on the increase. We have even gone to the trouble of installing food grade cladding to the walls and all galvanised steel buildings, with very little timber, so the buildings can be cleaned and disinfected after a batch leaves. We believe it is spreading during transport.

Anything we purchase for home is transported using private trailers were possible, or we use a hot pressure washer and disinfect the entire wagon before loading. Any sheep which are bought for home are quarantined and dipped before being introduced to our own flock, even after all that, we have still had scab twice in the past 8 years. We suspect it may have been spread via our clothing.

It's blimin time consuming work to eliminate, once it arrives. I would recommend dipping if time and facilities allow.

Are there any grants to put new sheep dips in or only to move an existing one? We like many covered ours in 20 years ago but keep thinking we should be putting one back in! Worst thing if buying store lambs or ewes in and not buying enough On a chosen day to warrant getting mobile man to come until can get a big bunch brought together in which time a few weeks could of gone by and increased chance of any issues spreading!

surprised no one has started making one , we made two , huge 3-4000l water tank ,anonther about 1500l and made up a steel cages , sliding door each end , floor stepped for drainage , holds 10- 15 ewes pick up with forend loader and drop in the tank , bit slower than normal dip but doesnt take up any room when not in use under a hedge , used to use the little one for washing sheep for show

Knowing my luck, the tractor would stall and not start again.

Was going to say, oil pipe go and game over. Sounds like an awful contraption.
no its not deep enough to drown anything just enough to get backs under , huge 4" tap on base of tank incase of emergency , we used to contract dip with it for 2 or 3 years when compulsory ministry were happy with it , , easily moved on a trailer , with couple ibc for water .
