Straw/Stubble Rake

Looking at getting a rake for this autumn, using the FETF grant. It looks like some of them come with discs on the front as an option. It will be working in front of a tined direct drill and as well as spreading out the residual straw I am interested in the fact that it may chop the straw up a bit and reduce the chances of collecting round the legs of the drill.
Does anyone have a rake with discs at the front and do you find that the discs work well? Looking at a 6m and would like it to go on a 125Hp tractor but might be pushing the limit a bit and it can go on a bigger tractor if needs be.

Always wondered if you could combine the elements of a straw rake with a set of ring rolls. Be the kiddie to chitting weeds and upsetting slugs.
Didn’t vaderstad used to offer a straw rake element for their rollers, maybe still do.
already a thing ! - tilso “rake and roll”

if anyone ever comes across a well priced used 12 m one let me know !
tilso closed their doors in 23, I bet they never made many 12m rake and rolls, as rare as rocking horse poo.
got a big green tilso monster here.

have seen a few for sale but yes it’s a rare beast

not sure re vaderstad but you can’t just put tines ahead of a roll without lots of stagger (4 rows minimum imo) or it wlll just block

we have a big sumo strake i bought used quite cheaply - was always a rake sceptic but it’s a great bit of kit, bit heavier than most rakes so it does a bit more 👍

Straw raking is very common across western Canada. Most of the zero til acres would be raked with ‘heavy harrows’
never seen one followed by a roller thou First step in my mind is to make sure your combine straw chopper is up to scratch. Once it’s chopped fine everything else becomes far easier and cheaper.

I’m not surprised about that we struggled to get an aqueel roller for our bedformer but eventually did but when I wanted a big set for our rolls they were impossible to deal with.

Rake n Roll now under FentechAgri along with SimTech drills https://www.fentechagri.com/products/cultivators/

125hp just enough for 6m rake, never been fussed by the discs, just drive as fast as you can!
That’s part of the effectiveness with our type of straw rake/harrows is filling them with straw to get the rolling and rubbing action against the ground add that to dry brittle straw and it smashes it up really good. Having the straw pass between the tines will only spread it a little bit and if it’s damp it’s just an anchor to drag along.

Before you buy a rake just have a look at the guttler Suppermaxx. I know its not an out and out stubble rake but more a very shallow total solid movement cultivator which knowing our summers aren't as dry as the US / Can to get that brittle straw ground up, it might just be more suitable and can be had with a roller on the rear to give some firming

Would it qualify for the fetf grant as a “rake” tho?

Have you seen the recent Supermaxx mod to make it into a drill effectively? Similar idea to Triton I suppose.
Having a SMaxx what do you reckon to the potential of this adaptation?
Versatile - drill and rake in one
