The 'amusing the kids' thread.

It's the last day at school for the kids for at least 6 months, so apart from helping with farm work (thinking of you, Jim Smith!) and chores, what do the forum recommend for entertaining children (aged 1-100) and keeping them (and us) fit in mind and body?

I've asked my 3, and so far they've suggested:
Cycling.
'The Farm Olympics' in place of the Tokyo Olympics.
Indoor hockey (grain store, tennis balls on the shopping list).
Kite flying
Rifle shooting
Clays
Rugby and football on the lawn (better find the pump!)
Toy exchange - clean out the stuff thats 'too young' and donate to frazzled neighbours.
Hot forge work, recycling the scrap pile to make 'stuff' on the anvil.
Bonfire (AKA 'spring clean')
'Bush craft'

That sounds like fun.

Larsen traps, building jumps for their horses, learning about field craft in the woods, air rifle beginnings, dog training assistance.

mine are 3 and 5 so more limited on manual work!

watching thread with interest!!

I'm coming over, I'll bring some baked beans too! Don't mind sweeping the concrete on an arable farm for a few weeks.

There is plenty of work being uploaded on their hwb (our version of your Microsoft teams I would think) to a chorus of unimaginable moaning!

The boy likes to pitch in with the calves and is very athletic, so running around the fields with the dogs (who are moaning as well), plenty of rugby/footballs in the hedges to keep him going for a while.

The girl is a couch potato so will be a challenge to say the least.

I can see the xbox getting a hammering every chance they get.

A treasure hunt. It is easy if you go out (to safe places around the house etc) and write clues on bits of paper as to where to find the next clue, as you can spot a nice place for the next clue. You can make these as complicated or as simple as you like. A drawing for non readers, like a sheep and a gate. Simple prize of a choccie at the end seems to be fine. For slightly older children, once they have done one you have made, they like to do their own for other children, or, be warned, for you. They then like to come with you and you can pretend to be totally stumped or go off in the wrong direction, at which point they will enjoy telling you. Loudly.
I used to do this in the summer holidays, and the clues took them right round the farm and back to the house.
