As more people live with conditions that previously contributed to an earlier death, there are larger numbers vulnerable to respiratory virus.
More people dying in Januarys etc as virus outbreaks contribute more to yearly figures

That much higher that we destroyed the economy? Nobody is disputing it's a nasty virus
Looking at those figures it was a cost too far but the point is that it was the highest in 20 years in spite of the measures being taken to cut the spread. Without the first lockdown they were told they were heading for 250,000 deaths, we have no way of knowing if it was true but if he ignored that we would have a different prime minister now. Almost every country in the world has tried to protect its citizens. Trouble is that some want one extreme and some want the other, it depends on how highly you value lives.

You are not going to allow for a massive increase in the number of old people???
Why do you think the ONS publish age standardised figures???

The figures show that if you are an old person, your chances of getting through 2020 were better than many in the last twenty.
This despite a "deadly" virus infecting 20 million people

You could probably make all sorts of assumptions looking at that lot!
The trend shows a general decline in deaths from the earlier years (might that be due to flu jabs maybe?) That's allowing for an aging population too!
Then the covid Yr was well up again but nowhere near what I would have expected.
Interesting Mr Holmes

We didn't contain it, we just pretended to.
The figures are close to normal because you need a properly deadly virus to cause harm.
20 million had it, how many exposed in a sense that control measures designed to prevent? ..40 million?

Medicine has improved massively which is why the graph is down and to the right with blips. My old man was carted off on Wednesday night to Derriford hospital and they have now confirmed sepsis. The doc said if it was 10 years ago he wouldn't have made the next morning. Hopefully he'll pull through. He's had a string of medical issues since the jab as have 2 other people close to me. All 3 have been in A&E. All 3 previously fit.
