Transmission oil.

I have a Jd 6140 and an Ford 8340, I have been buying transmission oil in 20l drums (probably the most expensive way)

My question is if I bought a 200l drum of hyguard would it be ok for use in the Ford?

And does oil lose any of its property’s ove the years, say if it’s not all used up in 5-10 years?

Go for Ford’s oil, it’s much cheaper and so is 10W/30 super universal. They all work fine in both Deere and Ford transmissions. So will any UTTO.
It will last fine in the barrel as long as you seal it every time and keep it in the shade under cover. Until recently I kept barrels on their side at a high waist height with gravity feeding taps on the small bung. Large bung at the top that needed to be loosened every time I transferred oil to the relevant 10 litre [ex crop chemical] bottle for transfer to the tractors.
Recently dismantled the lean-to that housed the oil and now use far less oil and the use of tractors, and at the moment have been buying 25 litre drums like you. All the big barrels are empty or storing waste oil. Will buy 205 litres again when a transmission is due for changing. Your tractors are suitable to use super universal in the engine as well as transmission, as are mine [no cats or Adblue], so one barrel for everything apart from the Deere’s front axle would be more economical and would be used up quicker.

EDIT. Been informed that your Deere is a modern M or R model for which a super universal is not suitable for the engine due to emission equipment. Buy a suitable emissionised [low SAPS long drain] engine oil for that particular tractor in 20 litre drums.

Super universal in a Deere 6140 engine? Don’t think so.

UTTO transmission backend oil in both I don’t think high guard will be cost effective they’ll be plenty of good quality oils cheaper than the manufactures labels.if your 6140 is out of warranty

Sorry should have mentioned it’s a 6140R

The oils are a bit of a minefield and wouldn’t trust what salesmen say so good to get the advise. Would like to save a few quid if possible and convenience of just having one drum. But as transmissions are slightly expensive to repair I’d like to make sure I’m getting the right stuff!

Your ford leaks enough(according to you) that the oil wont go out of date 😉

If you want to save some money you must buy the best oil for your tractor. Hygard for the back end and Plus 11 for the engine.

At about £100 per hour for repairs the best oil is the best.

The engine oil is backwards compatable, so you'd be able to but the fancy pants oil the Deere needs in the Ford, which may be more than it needs but would be easier to manage

I can’t see the point in running two different types of oil in the backend of tractors that share the same tipping pipes.most if not all tractor manufacturers and oil suppliers have specifications and they need to Match up,JD high-guard and NH multi G will be the same spec i would have thought the tractors internally won’t be that much different.
