Tree shear for 7.5t digger - is it worth it?

Not specifically the tree shear but early on there were reports that some of the BW gear would bend fairly easily, but may be fine now. It is significantly cheaper than TMK though.
Give some consideration decant cab guarding, no second chances when 8” goes through the screen...

thats a good point I hadn’t got to

I assume the danger Is of a cut bit coming back down the arm etc?

Fair enough, no issues with mine so far but I wasn’t prepared to spend 5k on one for what I wanted to do.

i know, I saw about 10 companies selling these, not prepared to ring up all of them, rang 4 and got a good feel for what they offered but I knew lost prices before picking up the phone.

POA = never going to get the call from me.

exactly, if we used them all day id have a different view

I work full time, so my shopping is done on evenings with the tablet. If they write poa they don’t make it onto the call list as I don’t have time to spend all day ringing for prices

So I have spoken to:

TMK - about £4800
Bucket Warehouse - £2990
Approved Hydraulics - £5000
JB Equipment - £2990.

all broadly the same. TMK have welded blade which seems high risk if it cracks on you. the rest have a few differences.

having a second headstock on the side is appealing. Bucket Warehouse have their best cut on the right not left so harder to see from the cab how its going.

I am favouring JB Equipment - https://www.jbequipment.co.uk/colle...-tree-shear-6-10-tonne?variant=18652199157822

adding the second head brings it to £3240, about a week to deliver....

and JAK 250 like for like is £5750 + VAT!

going for the JB I think

Most I have seen have fixed (welder or bolted) club shaped blades at the base with two double pincers that drag the tree over it. Some have more of a claw which is fixed on one side but this can’t be used as a grab.

i think for heavy use the claw will work better but for us farmers who do a bit of all sorts, the dual pincers with removable blade will work best

I bought an Mde. I rang them. They gave me a price. I ordered it. Wasn't too painful

You can grab with tmk if you are gentle, certainly good enough to window firewood

Some have a fixed jaw/cutting blade which the other jaw shears onto, others have twin moving jaws with spade/ double shaped curved blade.
What are the advantages of the two designs?

They all have a fixed blade, the choice is down to the type that have one moving arm and are more like a traditional shear, and the type with two moving arms which pull the material back towards the machine onto the fixed blade. Personally I've found the 2 armed machine I have to be incredibly versatile, maybe the one armed machines have other advantages that are only obvious when you use one.

The TMK machine is FIXED in place! have to grind out and re weld a new one!!

agree ref flexible, I would rather have a dual action pincer than a claw where only side moves, but I suspect the claw may be better for solid day in day out shearing

The other nice thing about taking the blade out is you can pick up some properly big timber and log it up with thechain saw while holding horizontal in the grab

The third option is design based on harvester felling head. Just instead of chainsaw there is a knife.
