Anyone known what the law is on this?
Is it a case of if there’s a sheet on the trailer you have to use it?
What about trailers without rollover sheets?
Don’t usually get much trouble from the plod round here but seems they maybe tightening up on farmers (or they where just board on a Sunday afternoon ?)

Well this may cause some angst, lorries hsve to run with a sheet,if you are using a tractor as a lorry ,a sheet should be required, somebody will be along shortly to quote a law

No, it certainly doesn't need sheeting. Think of all the silage trailers running around during the season.

As above though, if the trailer was overloaded and spuds were falling off, then he was asking for trouble. Otherwise its just plod pushing their luck and he should challenge the ticket on principle.
Get the NFU involved to see whether they are worthy of membership.

What happened after the copper issued the fine, was he left to go on his way or made to sheet the load before moving?
A local farmer who grows pumpkins was stopped by plod taking them to a buyer in potato boxes on an Ivor Williams trailer. Given an on the spot or have to go to court, he opted to go to court. Took over a year to get to court and he was starting to wish he’d took the on the spot but nonetheless rolled up to court without a solicitor. The magistrate put the charge to him and he replied that If the police officer felt the load was unsafe, why did he let him carry on with his journey?
Case dismissed, it was all over in minutes.

He wasn’t made to sheet it and continued, although he was turning of the road in another 100yds!
Can see the load over the top but I don’t think they will have been rolling off the sides, more a case of been sat up in the middle.

Got pulled here for the same offence one time, police man took me to other side of road and asked me what did I see, I said a load of potatoes, should they be covered he asked, not raining I said, why have you no number plate on trailer he said, I said I just bought this tractor out of south and haven't registered it yet, he said so it's not insured then, I said its insured on serial number, he checked it out with farmers union then said he couldn't book me as he had no registration number to put on the ticket. I still haven't registered the tractor lol. Dont know if he was letting me off of if he genuinely needed a number but I didn't ask

You really should get that tractor registered and a plate on the trailer, part of my plan on not getting bothered by the cops is to make sure I look legal, that way hopefully they won’t take a second look

Are you sure your insurance would cover you for use on the road if not registered for such

I imagine they will be very tight on tractors and trailers around here at the moment after a few big bales landed on people sitting outside a pub near Lancaster during the summer. I think you'd have to be a certain joyless sort of individual to do someone for an uncovered load of spuds, but times are a changing.
