Using inverter welder

For parts of 2 days I have been fitting in second hand barriers which are slightly shorter and a couple of support posts are bent
The barriers are welded in place
I have never used an inverter welder before and I was surprised how good it coped welding rusty steel
There’s no power in shed so a pto generator is used
Taking some time to do as the farmer wants to block off both ends of barriers

Who'd have thought a plastic & metal box with the same weight & dimensions as a 2x slice toaster could deliver so much - God bless our Chinese cousins.
Jasic Inverter & Stephill genny here - i'd be lost without them now
What size genny to run 160amp welder am setting up small workshop of grid and will be buying a generator to run it. Could you tell me was size genny is needed to run 160amp welder.TIA

I use a 6kva barrow type Stephill ( 3cyl Kubota diesel engine) to run my Jasic which copes all day non stop

For years I was restricted to only being able to weld in my workshop as that had the only suitable 3 phase power supply for my Triangle welder (a 2ft x 2ft beast on wheels, needing 2 men to pick it up).
Then i bought a second hand genny welder and thought it was the bees knees as i could weld anywhere( as long as I could wheel the great big thing to the site and put up with the noise of the diesel engine).
Then, one day last year a mate offered to lend his inverter welder to weld some flat plate to rsj in one of my sheds. I told him it would be a waste of time. How the hell is that shitty little thing, running on a 13 amp plug and extension lead going to have enough power to tack tin let alone 6 mm steel?
I went and bought myself one the next day. Bought a Jasic. Great welder but I kind of wish I'd bought British with an R-Tech.
Haven't scrapped the old Triangle yet though. It's like a family heirloom. And I can't store any crap on top of the inverter welder like I could on the Triangle!

Got a Lincoln electric outback 200 and that’s the best thing I have ever bought beats my parweld any day not having to unroll an extension and it only weighs 80-90kg so can chuck it in the truck easy.

I run an R- Tech 251 mig welder with a warrior welder bison mk2 generator, never missed a beat.

6kva will run a Kempii 150.
But I think I'd buy once, and get a bigger diesel one, you won't regret having overcapacity.
i blew up:oops: a petrol 6kw genny using a parweld 162 at full output, i think the engine was the let down rather than the alternator.

got a 13 kva (iirc ) pto one now (on not an exactly small tractor :sneaky:) and its much more sustainable long term i think.... for 200 and more or so amps inverter at least ....

I had a butters inverter welder years ago & it was great till one day it blew up. The next one was an ESAB and I’ve never really got on well with it… either blowing holes or laying down pigeon sh1t

I used a Thermal Arc 175 inverter once with a 6.5 kva genny. I welded about an inch , and died .
I was lucky . Took it back to place I bought it , and they fixed it , for something like 40 euro . But told me that usually they are kaput. Not worth fixing . You need probably 10 kva to safely use sn inverter welder.

Reading this with interest…I bought one of those Bester 200 multi output mig/arc welders yesterday that is the size of a toaster as above but is 13amp. Anything I need to be aware of? I will be using the mig option with gasless wire.

I have an rtech 180 mig/arc with a 13 amp adapter lead and haven't blown a fuse in three years. It's not very likely you will need to crank it up anywhere near max output but most dealers say to expect fuses to go after about 130A . Piece of six inch nail would cure that😉

I bought it to put a mezzanine in a shed so will be welding to some rsj…I’m assuming if I have the shortest extension possible and try not to do long welds without a decent ‘rest’ for the duty cycle?

I hear a lot about AVR and how you need it to prevent blowing up the welder. Don't know what it looks like but do you know if that setup has it built in somewhere?
How does that work anyway? Looks like 3 phase out the generator plugged into the consumer unit.
Are the single phase outputs all off the same phase? Could you run a 3phase plug straight out the top?
