Vaderstad Carrier with Crosscutters

Hi,

Anyone have any experience just using the Vaderstad Carrier with Crosscutter discs as a shallow tillage before drilling? Im thinking about trying this to get the straw-breakdown going faster, as previous direct drilling has had some problems in wet autumns with the straw. This is in clay soils btw, not been tilled for about 4 years.

Not experience per say. I’m a salesman who deals with horsch equipment. It’s primary role Is destruction of cover crops, maize and OSR stubbles prior to either further cultivation’s or drilling.
If direct drilling then it will chop and disperse residue from the previous crop while creating a small amount of tilth without being a full cultivation.

Yes, we fitted crosscutter discs on our 4m carrier last year. To be honest I wish I hadn’t bothered. They are expensive and the results I had were nothing like the video footage I saw posted by Vaderstad. We mainly use our carrier with an opico seeder box to establish our cover crops into chopped wheat stubble. We really struggled to get the seed into any moisture using the crosscutter discs compared to using the standard ones. As a result we resorted to drilling the cover crops with our 750a ...much better germination but more costly operation. I also tried to use the crosscutters to terminate a cover crop. It did a decent job on the radish but didn’t touch the black grass or rye grass.
I think I’ll be switching back to the conventional discs !
