He got 2 fantastic references.. either they didn't know or just turned a blind eye to it.
Did they follow up on the references though?
I once has a tenant that was a tenant from Hell. Her male partner was fine but as soon as he left, the rent stopped and the abuse began. I eventually got her evicted but not before she got one of her dodgy male pals to phone up and threaten me. Anyhow, about a year after she was turfed out I got a letter from another landlord who did not include contact details, berating me for giving the witch a glowing reference. Did I hell give her any reference! If he had actually followed up on the forged reference I would have told him that under no circumstances should he take her on. A few months later she was in the local paper claiming that her young son had cancer and that she was raising money for treatment that wasn't available on the NHS. Yeah right! I know that any money she did raise would go directly to the nearest supermarket booze counter. She left nearly a pickup truck full of empty bottles when she was turfed out.

I talked to one farmer and one contractor personally on the phone, never mentioned a thing,
One probably didn’t know anything but the other probably should have as a conviction overlaps his employment dates. But was it his place to say or not? Hard to know.
And they were real businesses just wasn’t his mates (I’ve had that before and always check the referee)

My grandfather’s best HGV driver moved on and got a better paid job with the county council. Three weeks before retirement he was pulled for a defective indicator and it was discovered he had no driving licence whatsoever. Never take anything for granted. Though he was to be fair, a very good driver.

doesnt anyone check licenses ?
even just for an identification check ?
i know when i started at Council, they scanned / photo copied my license & other relevant documents, to put on file
I presume they did a police check ?
i also had drug & alcohol tests

There is another side to this mind. If no one is ever prepared to employ anyone who has committed a crime, what is the long term solution to them forever being a drain on society because that is basically what will happen if they can't ever do any work.

On this forum there is often much talk about unmentionables who won't work and expect the state to pay for their existence. Here you have a guy who no one will allow to work? What is the answer?

Many of these people have in fact been failed by society at some point in the past.
It turned out that the man blatantly lied regarding his non existent family. How many other lies did he tell and would he be trustworthy in future? Leopards don`t change their spots as I have found out to my detriment.

Yes I have taken copies whenever I’ve employed. No drug or alcohol tests though.

As in the cases I mentioned, even if charged with an offence, the person is innocent until proven guilty. As for child abuse (not necessarily sex, can be violence or serious neglect) offenders, I doubt if 1 in 10 are ever charged, let alone found guilty. Children too young to testify and the partner refuses to accept what clearly has happened.

We take copies annually for insurance purposes as everyone could drive one of the farm vehicles

I googled him and also goes as David kelso.
To be fair to watmuff, his wasnt the only borders farm to go tits up in the 85-87 disaster. He just dragged a few down with him.
Always since been suspicious of farmers who write in farmers weekly , have all matching tractors and a shiny concrete yard with flower beds

Where were the people who were meant to be checking up on behalf of the owner. They should have been sued. He was out on a huge limb and living in a dream world and like all fraudsters dragged in everyone around him he could including relatives. Went on to do exactly the same again before he got canned.

Absolutely, but there were plenty of farms and estates forced to sell out in the late eighties due to weather, thatchers interest rates, etc

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
