We have that vitamins E seleen. But vets informed us there could be side affects and advised not to give to anything under 7 days old.

What are people using instead of vitesal having not been able to get it anymore.
If you are also low in zinc, copper, manganese along with selenium. Then there is an injectable called multimin. Which is new to the UK.
I haven't tried it out, yet.

Here we go again. Got Vita Seleen last year from the vet. Ordered more, got "Flatulex Forte" made in Greece.
I see Vita Seleen is still on production. I've emailed to see if they'll ship to GB.

What's everybody else using this year? Doesn't look like Vitasel will ever come back.

What are you planning on using it on?
And what sort of price did Vita Seleen cost you last year?

Have never used it. What am I missing out on?

We have severe Vit E and Sel deficiency. Think the entire Highlands is that way. Maybe due to high molybdenum?? Causes MD of the heart, or "white muscle disease". Your best lamb dead in the morning. Over and over. Calves tend to go wobbly first so you get a bit of warning.

The usual is to jag youngstock, which we do at birth. Started last year jagging ewes during pregnancy too. Reckon the fetus is better starting off with enough during formation than waiting til birth then trying to fix it.

Can't recollect price but very cheap compared to guaranteed dead lambs if we don't.

We got Flatulex off the vet as well at the end of last year. every calf gets a jab at birth. We are in a selenium defficient area too. As you say lots cheaper than a dead animal.

It is of no use to sheep. But the multimin mineral injection (that I apparently mentioned on this thread almost three years ago! ) is a selenium, copper, manganese and zinc all in one injection. I think that it is high in selenium and copper and more moderate in its zinc and manganese contribution.

I have since used it on young calves that are too small/young for a bolus. The dose is 1ml per 50kg for youngstock. Or 1ml per 100kg for adult cattle. The price I pay is about £65 for 100ml. So reasonably economic with young calves. It's longevity is about 3 months. It is recommended to be used pre calving and pre breeding in cows. With calves it is recommended to be used at birth and pre weaning.

Although I like the product, I prefer to use a bolus on the cows as it lasts (up to) 6 months and it has cobalt and iodine in it. And is less expensive - depending on what brand you choose.

Just read an interesting article that says low selenium may also be one cause of malpresentations. The theory being because the lamb is slightly weak it can't completely get in the right position for birth so you get leg or head back.
We'll be jagging next week or so, at scanning. Then they'll get their Mayo 5-1 bolus (thanks to TFF 😄) and vacc in 6 weeks.

Have been given same from our vet.
Never routinely used Vitasel etc. before but decided to try It this year on some Char x calves which can be a bit dopey.
Date sheet supplied with it says can be used both subcutaneously or intra muscular. Which route do you/others use for Vitasel or similar Vit E & Selenium in new born calves?
