Looking at trading in my 2009 ford focus, its a 1.6l petrol, only done 76000 miles - lovely tidy car. Need a pickup for towing and moving stuff about, plus driving round fields on the farm. budget of the trade in plus a couple of grand at most. Looking at maybe ford rangers and l200s? Ive been told not to get a navara as they snap in half. Needs to be reliable and not too thirsty. Any suggestions as to what to buy? Also would you advise doing a trade in, or selling the car privately and buying separate?

Do you really need a pick up. I have a 2008 Ford Kuga 4 wheel drive. Tow Bateson 9’ cattle box. Drive around fields in it. Done 185000 miles. Biggish space with back seat folded down. Very reliable cheaper to run than any pickup. May not suit your needs though.

I'm sorry to say your not going to get much for the car and adding a couple of £k will get you a wreck

the car is worth about 3k. Second hand car trade is quite strong at the moment. Anything newer would be a wreck, but looks like theres a fair few older ones about on around the 100k miles mark that dont look too bad that are in budget.

Take it you're not on the standard road tyres?

I'd buy a Navara. If you are worried about it snapping then take the back off and strengthen it.
Any pickup is going to use twice as much fuel as your Focus at best. I'd stay with what you have until fuel prices calm down.
focus gets 27mpg... be hard to do much worse really

I've a 17 plate Navara and if I drive gently it is fairly easy to get 40+ mpg (it is also fairly easy to get the same as your Focus too)
Cruise control set to 55-60mph on good roads and 45mpg is normal, best ever was 66mpg on a 4 mile journey.
A trailer empty or full knocks 10mpg off and a heavy trailer will knock more.
The above figures are with Conticontact tyres, put mud tyres on and it is a very different story.

Something very wrong if the Focus is only giving you 27mpg... Should be at least in the high 30s.
Nothing wrong with it at all. Runs beutifully. just isnt very efficient on fuel. if i drive it very very carefully i can just about squeeze something like the mid 30s, best i have ever managed is 38, but that is if there is no traffic and you sit at one (fairly slow) speed with no hills etc. Down the motorway you are lucky if it gets above 29. Quite underwhelmed on fuel consumption really, i did expect better.

My dad has a 2.0l diesel ford kuga 4wd. Good car really. Far more comfortable (much better seat support) and a better drive than my Isuzu d-max. But think it can only legally tow 2100kg which restricts what can go in cattle trailer. On the plus side wet dogs, oil, tools and dead things can go in the back of pickup and is of course separate from cabin. Unfortunately dad has had to give up driving so think we’ll have to sell it, which having had a run or two in it made me have a think and consider it for myself. His Kuga is manual gearbox though as I prefer autos these days. Nice cars though..

I’ve got a 10 plate L200 and I’m lucky to get 25mpg out of it! All terrain tyres and tools in the back. 🤷🏻‍♂️
