Where do farmers look for food waste feed and what is the going rate?

I work with numerous Food factories to reduce their waste. Many sell their food waste (cake, bread, carrot peels, hydrated pasta) direct to farmers, AC Shropshire’s or Sugarich. There’s not much material on who is looking for food waste feed or what the competitive rates are. Where would I find this information? What rates would you normally pay per ton?

It’s all just analysed and a comparable value to wheat or hipro soya is found and the price just tracks one or the other minus just enough to make the buyer think he’s saving money. Only very difficult to handle products are really much cheaper. Trade Assurance has taken all the one man band traders out of the equation

Not the same I know, but I fed a big kennel of dogs for years on what might be called 'commercial waste" for nothing or very little. Some of this has to be taken away at a cost, some free or very cheap. Sometimes you have to be a bit economical with the truth and inventive to get a foot in the door! For meat by products, you'd need to be licensed/registered and I imagine something similar applies to other waste sources.

I fed raw beef tripe for years, initially free to take away as the abattoir had to pay to dispose of it. But now there are outlets (the pet food industry) and it costs. I got a foot in the door with a major abattoir by saying I was looking for a tonne a week. That was enough to make it worth their while. I never actually took that but paid for what I did take which was a fair bit less. I got in touch with one firm that handled meat by-products and when they heard how much I really wanted, gave me a free supply (as much as I wanted) "just to stop you messing up the market"! They had a monopoly and wanted to keep it!

There will be trade papers that advertise waste. The Meat Trade Journal was one, but I don't suppose you are looking for meat by-products! Ask your local librarian. She is trained to help you.

Its how long is a piece of string, depends on the nature of the feed, proximity of the farm to the factory, can they take loads at short notice ? does the product come with a load of water that needs containing? Does it need further processing ? How much local demand there is for it ? Is it farm assured ?
and as above ,the feeder will want to be making a worthwhile saving against more conventional products.

By products/waste only have a value if they are available 52 weeks of the year and are of a consistent quality and quantity.
Transport costs usually cancel out much value.

Looking ahead there will be less potatoes and carrots.
A lot of what used to cost to dispose of now has a value. Fat from animals is used in aviation fuel and pet food has a huge demand now.

I think the Farmers Guardian used to have adverts but I haven't seen a copy for years. My local game dealer says even bones have a value these days. They are crushed for the oil! The cheapest things are deer skins (free for training ponies) and pheasants (50p each)!
