the discovery 3 is an awesome motor for super cheap money, the 2.7 is a lovely engine but it is thirsty.

If you get a discovery 3 get a pre march 2006 and the tax is nearly half the cost, that what i had. unless commercial of course.

Discovery 4 3.0 lump is MUCH better on fuel like literately 10 pg better if not more, but same again get a post 2013? and its cheaper tax again anything inbetween is expensive. Plus of you get post 2013 you get the 8 speed box which with the 3.0 improves economy even more and is super smooth plus more power!!

My mechanic would have a 3 over a 4 just more reliable engine wise over here. Mine has 280000 on it at the minute and the newer oil pump not fitted to the pre 2008 which caused engine failure more often if not upgraded

The disco is back up trailer donkey really so if replaced with a 90 the 90 would just be a toy that can trailer when needed. 110 does most of it

be very careful with the older discos, blow gearboxes at 100k(not sure about newer ones) and body off to replace,
zf box, spoke to zf and they said its because they tell every manufacturer to replace the gearbox oil at 50k max but landrover say its sealed for life!!!!! so if full LR service history won't of been changed!!
Also egr valves and turbos common on newer ones and its body off to do that aswell.
Sorry to be doom and gloom but only see the broken ones

bit of a sweeping statement on the gear box 'blow gearboxes at 100k', i assume you mean 6 speed zf6hp in the dicso 3 and early dicso 4, i have had both with over 150k on original boxes, im aware early torque converters can fail, mine had a bit of judder in my 2005 d3 cured by dr tranny!!

that box in in loads of application fro bmw to jag and is generally regarded as extremely reliable.

Anyone tried a Touareg?

An underrated vehicle in my view. I have a number of friends running these from 04 plates upwards. All of them are towing and all of them are worked hard. I hear very few complaints even from the ones with 200k miles of them. They seem a good solid bus and the V6 TDI is a good engine. I know of a couple of V10 TDI locally also with high miles causing no bother either. One friend in particular tows livestock trailers Monday to Friday every week. When he was running LR Disco/RR Sport he was changing them as the warranty ran out due to constant issues. Now on Touareg he says he does not need to change them as they are so reliable. In fact thinking about it I could name 14 Touraregs within 3 mile radius of me in farm or building industry. I think that in itself speaks volumes.

sorry, didn't mean to offend, yes and the range rover sports,I have only come across the problem in the LR so after speaking to the man at zf i presume the oil is changed as part of the service schedule for the other brands. zf boxes are in loads of vehicles like you say

It's even in the Ford Ranger, built under license by Ford and installed by the million worldwide, if you add ZF and Ford numbers together.

On the flip side we do have a full time mechanic in the yard to fix it once a month .

I’ve always had a hankering for a Nissan Pathfinder. No idea how many of the OP’s boxes it would tick, but in black with dark windows and a bit of chrome........ ?

pathfinder if thirsty but cheap to buy and a good basic all rounder.

that said about to spend £2k on parts for underneath.

nissan have checked mine out and certified that it’s safe.

can only tow 2.8t though. Gearbox is horrific but it’s good off road.

disco 4 on the other hand is incredible. You just need a spare one for when the first one goes wrong.

as an avid fan once said, ‘the trouble with land rovers is they like a cuddle with with the dealer too often’

I certainly wouldn't buy a modren RR but a mk3 disco V6 is a fab tow motor and if you can affort to run a vehicle that will never ever exceed 25MPG then I'd say go for this. there is really nothing better but you have to put your hand in your pocket.

There is one alternative mind. A properly rebuilt galv chassis LR 110 van/rag-top with the lovely 300 series motor in. Food for thought.......
