Rumour or truth. Can’t see why they would want to buy them? They buy plenty of barley in Aberdeenshire already and have time to build suppliers ahead of the Maltings.

Hmmm. McCreath, Simpson, Prentice, Lindsay. Another local business amalgamated into the history books. Not good for competition or farming in the Borders, not in the slightest.

They’ve never been known to be too generous with their prices, which is why we haven’t sold them anything for 18 years.
But this article goes to show that there’s plenty of money in barley, just not necessarily for the farmer that grows it.

Seem to be more highly thought of North of the Forth than in the borders where I dare say they have far more history and upset far more farmers over the years.
Certainly a better reputation than WNL up here for rejections in recent years. Always found them better on price paid for malting barley compared to Bairds too.

Less competition is however never a good thing and seems to be ever increasing at each end of the supply chain.
Even local accountants, insurance brokers and Vets are now being bought over by big multi nationals:(

MSP would like it all their own way. 3 year contracts with the most complicated formula to work out prices which is generally lower than the competition, tied in that you have to buy the seed from them, buy the chemicals from them or send in your spray records of what has been applied. The competition can pay a higher price with no conditions and then sell it into Simpsons malt, it makes a mockery of the contracts.
