Me too. I remember well the startled faces of London natives when we flooded the Tube system with smelly wax jackets, tweedy breeks, flat caps, and polite manners.
And people were actually smiling at each other on the tube! A few of us travelled across town on the tube later on that night joking about all the normal silly farm stuff, slurry spreading, our injuries, sheep and so on, and as we got off, the two middle aged London ladies who had been in the carriage with us called out happily and said "We couldn't help listening to you all, it was the funniest journey we've ever had" and everyone wished each other well before going our separate ways. :)

I've only been on one protest march in my life, one of the Countryside Marches. As rural people we were and still are a minority. There wasn't that much press coverage for over 400,000 people descending on London, probably because we didn't break windows or pull down statues. The only person I can remember shouting was a steward up a lamppost telling gentlemen to doff their caps as they passed the cenotaph.
It didn't stop the police from going in more heavy handed on the last one than they did last week.

It's crazy.
When will these idiots realise that everything was relative to the 'thinking' at the moment in time that it occured.

Things move on and thinking (quite rightly so, in a lot of cases, changes) but there's no reason to wear sack cloth and ashes over actions that were petfectly legal in the past. They need to get over it and move on too.

In recent history, Germany was run by a bu66er who commited heinous crimes but is it a reason to boycott them now? I don't think so.

It's a pity the bu66ers haven't something better to do.
The nazi flag is banned in Germany to this day. How does this differ from removing statues of slave traders ?

President Macron tonight,
We will not remove our statues, we will not allow them to be torn down. France has to remember her history, both good and bad, so we can move forward , learn from it and improve.
He went on to say that there are inequalities in France but he will do everything he can to see that everyone is treated equally and given equal opportunities.

I haven't read the whole thread. My personal view on the Bristol statue is that it should have remained but with a new plaque. As I understand it, negotiations on an alternative wording have been going on for several years but the different sides couldn't agree.

To address the slavery history issue, a new statue should have been commissioned and placed immediately next to the existing one, of a larger negro slave, arms raised in chains that have been cut, in a gesture of triumph, showing empowerment and freedom. I heard a (black) interviewee on the Radio saying 'I don't want to walk past that statue and be reminded of slavery.' Actually I think everyone who walked past that statue should have been reminded of slavery. Our complex and in many cases cruel past should not be hidden away in a museum.

Our concerns should be now and the future, we can't undo the past but we can change the future and modern slavery - of people of every colour - is an urgent issue.

I would think there will be a lot of sweat shop Labour/ just about slavery in country’s like Pakistan/India and China so why make such a fuss over here

I suspect the UK is rife with it like many other places. These illegals entering the country probably end up working in the dark economy run by the same folk who run them in Asia. just like those 23 Chinese shellfish pickers that were drowned in Morcombe bay a few years back.

A case of people in glass houses when it comes to the Daily Mail. :ROFLMAO:

Doesnt all this just show that most of history shows all sides in both a good and bad way? The problem only arises when the moral high ground is claimed when perhaps the gutter is more appropriate.
The Mail is a joke but the guardian is imvho a disgrace every day they print anything and everything they can that's, anti the uk gov, pro europe and of of dont forget the anti farm rhetoric.

IMO all newspapers are a) a mouthpiece for their owners and b) an echo chamber for their readers.

I was told off once for selling black pudding. I told him I was born in Africa so it is allowed. He went off in a huff!
