Dad always says plastic is the best invention. Bale wrap, sheets, net etc for silage production, and all the plastic hand tools and parts of machinery

Folks go on about the wheel and the Ferguson system etc but I reckon for agriculture, construction and so many other applications whoever invented the hydraulic cylinder must have saved unknown amounts of man hours and health conditions and given longer life expectations to countless workers
William Armstrong, if he did not invent it, did much do develop its use.

Now I've had time to think about it, probably the wattle hurdle. That allowed stock to be fenced in and the start of the Enclosure Acts. Could you have cultivated land with stock roaming loose?

My father always said the combine harvester was one of the best ever inventions.
Something maybe we all now take for granted: but he and his contemporaries had worked with the binder and the threshing box, and they remembered the number of man hours needed to cut and stook sheaves of corn before carting them home to be crafted into outdoor ricks. Then several days threshing the sheaves during the winter with all the attendant hard work and the manpower that had to be assembled just to separate grain and chaff from straw.

Personally I think the invention of the Ferguson System was a momentous turning point in farm mechanisation.
