I read a piece that Bill Gates said his business model was to have enough reserves for the business to keep paying its staff and to continue with it R and D for a year from the day none of its customers paid a penny.

that's good
Who is being bitter ?

Call this what you like - I do not like the envy of others. Work to improve what you have, not demand something else unearned.

I don't worry about what wealthy people do with their money & welcome the fresh ideas they bring. Yes, there are downsides like pricing the locals out of the market. Outsiders buying into land is hardly a new phenomenon.

Why bring up envy ? who is being envious ?

I don't worry about wealthy folk buying land either, be good if they would except their greed though it maybe the first step for them to get past it

Lets just see how efficient some of the big boys really are without subsidy.
I can see more tenancies coming up and more mixed farming of old rather than chemical intensive mono culture. No business can afford to pay the going rate for the hard work and endless hours that a sole trader/family are prepared to put in. While that may seem a backward step socially in some ways the quality of life and utter enjoyment is worth every hour. Not everyones choice of course.

I could be very rude and insulting and say that some people need the rich to buy land so they can manage it for them because they havent the balls to try to farm themselves.
But i wont say that cos i am polite .

So if one person owned all the land in the UK that would be ok with you ?

Well, the monarch used to "own" it all. It was given away in bits to those who did their dirty work e.g. raising armies. My previous boss got given land for being spymaster to James I, a Scotsman. No, it wouldn't bother me if one person owned it all - someone has to look after it.

I separate asset ownership from business. My savings are tied up elsewhere because (ironically) I can get a better return than from buying farmland & I can liquidate it more quickly.

:ROFLMAO: Each to their own! I am farming land, just someone else's. I can live with your opinion on whether or not I should be buying acres or not.

You must have missed this question @Brisel

I had indirectly answered this in my other replies, but I am accusing Glasshouse of envy. I don't quite get your concept of greed either - are you happy for their wealth to be in forms other than farmland? If someone wants to buy land, I have no problem with that. Sure, it means that it is harder for me to work up to buying my own farm. I own a house but it is rented out while I rent the one I live in because it's part of the job and advantageous to do so.

I don't see my life's quest as owning everything I manage. Perhaps that's unusual? - my brother pays his mortgage off early rather than invest the cash elsewhere for a better return but it matters to him. Do you own your farm outright?

So in your eyes the great liberals who campaigned to help the poorest in society by limiting the behaviour of the super rich were just simply jealous?

The way to help the disadvantaged isn't to penalise the advantaged.

Quite, though in law that's what you need to do as the super rich can afford better lawyers & accountants.

You don't multiply wealth by dividing it.

So in your eyes the great liberals who campaigned to help the poorest in society by limiting the behaviour of the super rich were just simply jealous?

No, just you.

I'm also trying to understand what @Henarar means by "greedy."

Dyson is indeed ‘farming’ the land he has bought. He has had direct input on policy and plan from what I’ve read. You don’t have to be actually sat on a tractor seat to be ‘farming’.
I’ll bet it’s a while since he assembled a vacuum cleaner too but we still think of him as a vacuum manufacturer.
I can’t understand why he attracts the criticism he does. He is obviously an extraordinary individual to achieve what he has, why would anyone expect him to settle for ‘ordinary’ scale or vision in this new venture?
I would say the same would apply to Gates et al.

simply look up the definition of greed, its mainly used for money, food or power but it can be anything.
I am ok for them to buy land and I haven't said I am not, I haven't even said that greed is bad, though it is spose to be the root of all evil
All I own as regards to property is a part share in about 7 acres with no buildings on it but it some contexts I could be considered greedy for having so much land and I except that.

From what he has put on this thread I wouldn't say that @glasshouse was envious but perhaps I am reading what he is saying differently to you.
