shearing hand piece knowledge for dummies

I've spent many hours and pounds grinding down gear to get the hollow correct by the heiniger guide.

The lesson I'll pass on to my kids will be forget the stone + guage, unless your using a heiniger pendulum on a heiniger grinder, grinding heiniger gear.
There is too much variation between makes to get one system to work with the stone.
I've since given up trying to get a perfect hollow and now aim for a perfect cut .i.e. sharp gear as @Nithsdale Farmer says.
What I changed was probably the pendulums. I've currently got two different style super shear ones, and they seem to be giving me a good cut. I previously managed to get a good cut on the old Lister golf club pendulums as you could change the pressure point. I've tried Ellery and heiniger but you need to understand the pressure point principal to get the most out of those types and I didn't at the time. The supershear pendulums probably aren't the best for me because I run mainly heiniger combs so I'd probably be better with a heiniger pendulum. What I should really do is change the pendulum as the comb/cutters grind down as the cutters start to tip grind but I'm not shearing enough to care that much.

How much of a hollow do you think you need?
theres supposed to be a hollow both ways across and front to back ive got across one ok on mine but not the up and down as shown in that comb pic /by the h guage......
my grind is wrong front to back almost opposite to what it should look like and i think i now know why. i put a straight edge cross the radius of the disc ( which i haven't done before just put one across the diameter which shows ok.shape ) this morn and its convex ! (n) shows a bit of daylight through the middle , first i thought it might be uneven paper sticking or something but it shows it on the bare disc, and that fits exactly with what the hollow guage shows me.
will need a new disc i'm pretty sure now.

I thought you'd decided on changing the disc ages ago :bag:

Funny thing is even the flippin clamp is like it not so much as to not glue the paper on good enough though.
The discs both show daylight in the middle not a lot bug just enough to spoil things bi* when translated to the combs/ cutters .
Must be age related deterioratin.. consistant in each metal part its old spun steel and heavy a s heck. I should think as they're donkeys yrs old .

I'm just hoping a new discs(s) will just bourbon the same inch spindle, will be better being full size as well.can t justify a new whole grinder.
" Bolt on " flippin screen keyboardsjiggered as well :banghead::notworthy::D

A quick look on Horner site, if you get a disc to fit Heiniger, Lister or Supershear they are all 1inch spindle. The Horner (Beiyuan) grinder uses 25mm spindle... so you should be fine

How are you getting on with your grinding?

Lifted this off Facebook page, shows you the hollow :ROFLMAO:

It's actually a really good showing of the grinding lines going straight up the middle 3 teeth

Got a new wheel, just for combs, the bit extra diameter helps as the paper fits nicer and grinding to the edge goes smoother.
I moved the pendulum in to the spindle a bit after before, other than that just focus on how to stand and pressure used, and keep good papers on.
They are Cutting really well actually ,pleased with how they're sharpened, I dont use the hollow gauge, when all our combs have been ground a few times more like I'm doing it now, I will then put them on the H gauge again and see.
but the main thing is that they are cutting well, not tugging at the wool at all.
New wheel will be better for the bearings on the pulley block i think, as it is far, far lighter.
Will still use one of the older wheels for cutters.
Nother thing is I wont be using self adhesive papers again tho after having tried one.... after a time they, unstick/ unpeel:rolleyes:(n)
Must be damp atmosphere I guess as I put it on the wheel spotless.

The self stick papers are alrite and alot less messy but like you say the damp effects them alot my grinder is in the garage of the house and they peel off in there ive started taking them in the house once ive finished grinding and they last a bit longer now, ive also found the grit on the paper is not stuck aswell as it is on normal papers.

see the belt drive was originally a flat belt i guess, on a stationary engine, whereas now its on a 240v motor.

Bellied a few lambs a week or 2 ago, my gear is definitely not sharp across the comb - the teeth nearest the spindle when the comb is on the grinder go blunt quicker than the other side. I reckon I'm standing a little more to the left than I should be, so I'm not putting equal pressure on the comb.. need to remember when I next grind... But that'll not be until shearing next year.

My grinder is out in the old dairy wash house, same as you're saying - damp is an issue. Noticed last week when I was in the paper on the grinder is a bit mouldy looking, but a little rub it cleaned off. No idea how long paper is good staying on the disc for. It's only half worn and been on since June. It'll get changed probably in May as I do my gear... be a nightmare getting the glue of

Yeah papers will be fudged with the damp now if in a cold damp shed keep your new ones in the house or the grit just falls of them and they dont get as many grinds.

SO...shearing again....BUT we have stripes and shearer reckons it's hard going :scratchhead: .....is it handpiece (as she thinks) or duff battery (it's 12v) as i think:scratchhead:

I hope this isn't the handpiece you renovated last year?! (will you have another go with the flowery screwdriver and crowbar this year??? Can I use my for f**k sakes gif again???)

My one is running beautiful

Could be a dull battery, or more likely combs and cutters not ground properly
