Recommend me a car ( no this isnt a pickup thread)

I'd vote for the Skoda Kodiaq, bought one in 2017, it's been a good car, needed a new battery under warranty (VAG had a batch of bad batteries) and a glow plug in 80,000 miles, other than that it's just been standard wear items and servicing, super comfortable, goes well, does 45mpg (2.0tdi) even with the current mrs JMM's lead right boot, and it sticks to the road like glue. To be fair anything built on the VAG MQB platform will be similar.
Wife is keen for 1 of them next. SE L looks a good spec?

I know two people with 3008 (same car really) and no real bother. Know a few people with the 's**t' 1.6 hdi engine, one still going at 150k miles and the other imploded at 140. I think they need to be serviced regularly with specific oil.

I know somebody with a 3008 that has been no end of bother. Mainly electrical issues. Its on a 20 plate and last year spent 16 weeks in at the dealer for multiple electrical issues. All being done under warranty but its the hassle factor of going back and forth with it and getting a little courtesy car which is no use to them with 3 children etc.

In fairness that's the problem with recommendations, some have no bother others loads and then it can be down to engine/spec and how it's looked after.

Goven budget and talking about going smaller the Karoq is probably more in line. My MQB Passat was faultless and if it had been an auto I'd still have it.

Update, have come across an xc 40 awd d3 25k miles 69.plate for £20k from a reliable known source.(wasn't looking for one of these it just happened to turn up )
it's diesel which I'm not fussed either way ,
Nice motor, but am I heading down wrong route when government want us into electric and out of diesel. Its also 4.5 years old in another 4.5 years that's a 9 year old car with 70k on clock and electric being rammed down our throats.will it be worthless.
I'm undecided.

It definitely won't be worthless.

It will be worth more than an electric car at that age and miles

Still can't see diesels being worthless there's always going to be an export market with less stringent rules on emissions.
Just look at the prices of old pickups, they'd be worthless otherwise

If it is the kind of car that suits you then best be having it?

Just make sure it's serviced on the dot and the exact spec of engine oil required by Volvo is used. It won't cost you much more money in servicing to do this.

That's the problem with most diesels these days. There's a spot between 80 - 120k when they can cost BIG money. BMW and Merc timing chains, Injectors (everything), Adblue pumps, EGR, DPF, Injector seals you name it. Diesels over 80k are always a gamble. sometimes you win others you don't
I know of 2 E class Mercs that are either side of 500k miles.Other than a few suspension bushes and usual wear and tear the engines have only had one timing chain change.Original auto boxes. One is now 21 and the other 11 years. They were both taxis and serviced properly by an inde after warranty. The 11 yr looks like a 5 year car to me.

Our local indie garage was struggling to obtain Volvo 4x4 parts.
I like the fact that Skoda shares 99% of its parts with VW badged vehicles. Never had problems obtaining parts over three facelifts.

What is this fad with SUV / jacked up seats for older folks these days

Cars getting far too big

Look at this. The Rover in it's day was classed as a big car and mainly driven by older men

Suckered into buying methinks.
The number of huge seven+ seat vehicles is unbelievable, particularly in town where most are pointless.
The X5, Q7 being simply look-at-me rides.
Also parking. Note this from your picture☹️🤪

If you want a larf, visit Lymington Public slip (slightly off topic here)
or a particular ex Budgens Supermarket car park near Aylesbury which is now an M&S very posh Supermarket.
The parking spaces were designed to comfortably fit a Cortina/Marina sized vehicle.
With the upgrade to M&S the clientele and vehicles changed to RR’s, Audi 4x4’s, Mercedes Estates and etc. Mostly in grey colour and all London money.
Each one of these are at least 4” wider and longer than the original parking space design measurements which is where the fun begins😆

Im 33, iv got a citroen c3,the wife has a kia sportage and my mum has a vw passat r line. The citroen is dead on for getting in and out of and is a great wee car,the kia is better for getting out of, the most expensive vw is awful to get in and out of as its that low. Lovely looking car but not my cup of tea, i prefer the citroen with its 3 knobs for the heater and a radio with buttons as i can adjust both on the go without having to take my eyes of the road instead of looking at touchscreens

KISS principle
Most manufacturers have forgotten this☹️
