Friend with a 17 year old reckons they saved £600 by waiting 3 months after the lad passed his test, compared with getting cover straight away..
A couple of weeks would probably have been similar.
It was £600 cheaper to insure my daughter's car just because it was two weeks away and not that day.
Suppose it takes some of the hot headedness out of them.

Do you have Revolut on the uk, It was the cheapest for my daughter on a Fiat 500, by quite a bit, she has to plug a box into the lighter plug , all done through there app. It can also make a difference if they have been driving for a year as a named driver

Added son to my policy was an extra £80 last year (that includes learning and passing)as a named driver.
Went up from £400 to £1000 on this year's renewal,(no changes, no accidents) excess is higher if he has an accident, no black box and it's group 11 insurance. 13k miles per year and business use

Was going to change the car as its done 180,000 and is due a clutch in near future plus cambelt, but rang for quotes on similar cars and it went up to £1800 so that £800 will go a long way for repairs.
This is with directline have 12 years protected no claims on policy, owned the car 5 years.
To be honest I think with car insurance they make the rules up as they go along

Daughter got a 2010 Pug 207 1.6 dieselin April last year (nice and cheap as elder sister was upgrading and we got it for the trade in value), learner insurance was £230 for a year. Passed end August cost another £1300 to upgrade and have black box, but was cheapest option at the time plus the learner time counted toward no claims.

Just done the renewal, current company wanted £1900 originally but after discussions came down to £1630. Put it in the comparison sites and ended up at £957 with Hastings and only an App based black box thing. Next nearest was £1300

What about small car type vans . If they only have 2 seats there is surely a saving
Not always, back in the day I started with a 850 mini van, now mini vans were made to carry 5 cwt, after football 2 in the front 3 in the back, one of the lads weighed 2 cwt alone, so certainly overloaded.

Having a mattress in the back can turn out expensive as well.

Our son passed a few weeks ago and the figures are just mind blowing!! Really needs looking into and capping by the government. We ended up with a company called Flickr (or something like that). Everything is against the poor lad though. He's only allowed to do so many miles within the year but he's secured a really good apprentaship but its 25mile there, 25mile back, so he's soon going to use up his allocation. So as usual just because we are up in the hills and all he wants to do is graft, we are penalised. What a state of a country we live in, its just total pants!🤬

Happy days. Started with a mini van. For those of a certain age, the one with the starter button on the floor. Yep, half the football team no bother & numerous YFC juniors all fitted in without complaint.

A 125 might be a solution that's how mine got to his apprenticeship, before passing his car test. Insurance in his name £460 mileage capped at 6000.
Frustrating bike insurance no claims doesn't carry over to car

son passed his test beginning of march , insured a 1.2 fabia for £1250 7 or 8000 miles a year , a black box would have been 100 less but he would have been penalised coming home after 10 from his part job , friends with fiestas , corsa etc are paying over 2 grand , fabia group 5 insurance , polo group 15 same car underneath

I was thinking that don't know why they have to have a car straight away.

Teach him how to read the road and other drivers too which should make him a better driver when he gets in the car.

Are larger cars not a bit cheaper? Some of these quotes are plain nuts.

not sure to be honest , a friends son had a renault tiwgo or something like that 1500cc engine and 130 horse cheap insurance as it was un popular , on the compare site my son quotes went from 1150 right up to 5500 grand , i phoned and asked about a black for my son and was told it was unsuitable because of his late working , you think they would make exemptions for young people working , same as living on a back road you are penalised by the black box
