A bill for warranty work

Location

It is shocking how little idea some people have of their finances. We had a haulier a small family firm, who put in a polite reminder about a bill for a lot of work done 3 years previous. We had paid them promptly at the time, luckily we had all the paperwork. But I wonder how they could be in that situation to not know how this large sum went.

Not just small firms!

We contract out a lot of haulage, just had a major haulier suspend work with us as we owe them a 5 figure sum.

Turns out they have not been getting POD's (Proof of delivery notes) from the customers when delivering so our Accounts Dept will not pay their bill as there is no proof the work was done. Haulier was told POD's were needed 6 months ago, but still carried on delivering and not collecting POD's!

How difficult would it have been for you to do this adjustment yourself?

If he does that, then warranty may be invalid.

I have had similar to the OP, new machine fault from within a few weeks of delivery. Took ages to be fixed then I get a bill.
Had the “you bought the wrong warranty” conversation.

Not impressed

Even a £9.99 supermarket kettle has a year's warranty to work, under the Sale of Goods Act. Quote the law to jig them up.

It's no good the dealer trying to hide behind the manufacture's warranty, your contract is with the dealer, remind him of the Sale of Goods Act, or whatever it's called these days. The product has to be fit for purpose and of merchantable quality.

^^ This. But if the fault is repeated (as it was with a tractor of ours) then the dealer has to foot the bill, as the supplier won't honour the warranty. Extended warranties come with strings, conditions and a cost up front built into the price of the article. Sometimes (as with us) it isn't even offered.
