havnt decided what to do following an unplanned increase in sp barley though cant see the current crop being cleared in time for osr however if we got it chitted then mucked or slurried would consider ww or wb failing that leave it till spring and either try to get sp barley in earlier than this year or beans ,to be fair the sp barley looks well and cost zilch in comparison

Spring barley volunteers can be a real nuisance in winter barley unless you have the time to plough or wait for the volunteers to chit. We have just cut 70 odd acres where they were very competitive and harboured Rinco and Net Blotch.
we have been no till winter barley after spring barley and experience no issues, i think you either need to plough it down properly or leave it all on the surface. min till cultivating is probably the worst option.

Why so?

I DD’ed winter Barley after SB last year. It came wet soon after drilling and, on our heavy soils, you could see every combine wheeling until quite recently.
A little shallow cultivation would have paid dividends in hindsight, and probably the end of DD cereals here tbh.

Because cultivating mixes the previous seed to different depths meaning different emergence timings.

What was the history of the field cultivation’s wise? Long term DD? How was the spring barley established

DD for 7 years now. Mostly been SB, followed by WB, followed by stubble turnips. Did once do WB to WB, with a grazed crop of mustard between, which is what will happen this year too.

The only really good crop was WB in 2018, when we had a dry winter. Every other year the wet weather on heavy soil didn’t suit the barley at all, as the DD soil wasn’t draining well enough (plenty of drains underneath).

We have certainly seen winter barley struggle dd on heavy land where mole drainage/drainage systems aren’t top notch. It’s definitely the most sensitive crop. Thankfully only about 5ha out of 180 this year really showed any issues.
