They are obviously well passed the rosette stage, but a bit off flowering yet, would it be a waste to spray them now or would it still do a job?

Also, I sprayed some a couple of weeks ago that look to be dying, how long should you leave the, after spraying before you top them?

In an ideal world, top them and spray regrowth. In a less ideal world, Thistlex will still take them down at that stage (but not much further on) ime.

As for topping after spraying, iirc the label on Thistlex says at least 3 weeks before mowing? Otherwise, just leave them to die back on their own, assuming you can stand seeing them.

Leave them until they are close to flowering and too them short. It drains the root energy and when the regrowth comes 6-8 inches spray them then. If you can wipe them a week before flowering with round up then top after a week would be your cheapest option.

Stopping them from seeding is your first priority. Get them cut before they flower. You could spray with something cheaper than thistlex by the time there is enough regrowth at this time of year and thistlex next spring.

Top them down now, and spray later when all have poked back up.

I would say that if you wish to spray them now, I would use forefront. I have had a customer use forefront on a big mess of creepers at around this stage (had I known they were so large I would have probably recommended against it) and it nailed every one of them, much to my surprise. Field remains clean to this day.

Thistlex will still get them but not as well.
Leave them for another week and spray with MCPA or 24D if you have clover.
Or as said top them and wait for the regrowth and then spray with the above or Thistlex just on the thistles.
Seeds from Creeping thistles are only as issue if you have a lot of bare ground. Gore thistles seeds are always viable.

You have rushes there as well so it wants to be topped back and left until it is all growing back nice. A full rate go with MCPA and 2,4D might well solve both birds with one stone.
Lots and lots of rushes 😂 roundup in the wiper is good on them, jus finished spreading 150t of lime the other day, could do with another 500 but it’s a start! There’s quite a lot of clover in amongst the sward and I’m keen not to knock it as most of the grazing ground gets zero fert so rely on it quite a bit. The thistles are only in quite defined patches so don’t mind spraying them

Spent the morning wiping bracken, it’s rather satisfying work, didn’t get the wiper til later in July last year so was going into a dense canopy blind, quite dodgy work, couped the bike once. Went on with quite a high rate which did a proper job on the bracken, but didn’t leave much underneath either so going in earlier and trying not to soak everything this year, will see how it goes, certainly saves a lot of time going back and forth refilling.

Still managed to land high and dry on a stone tho…

Thistles got earlier with thistlex:
