Bag lifter

We have a fairly new JCB pallet fork.
The trouble with pallet forks, even if tubes or some thing else is fitted to the forks for bag protection, is that they are too low on the carriage. It didn't matter when the bags where delivered on a flatbed lorry, but these days they all come in curtain siders with a roof that it's all too easy to hit with the top of the carriage.

I made my own over 20 years ago. When I retired I gave it (rather than sell it) to a neighbour.

We have a fairly new JCB pallet fork. I can see the argument that the edges are sharp compared with a tube.

The easiest solution is to run a file along the top corner edges of each tine, and 'polish' the sharpness off of them. It takes about half an hour to do both, run your fingers along the edges before and after, it transforms the job.

We used 6” grain handling tube over our pallet forks to give a smooth round profile. It works well and stops the forks damaging the loops.

However for filling the drill we made a frame that the bag sits in and supports the bottom of the bag with a hole in the middle for the spout of the bag to protrude through. The frame has forklift pockets such that the loops of the bag are not used to lift it in this scenario.

heard of too many horror stories of crushed drills let alone people to trust the loops even with a specifically made bag lifter. Takes a few minutes longer perhaps to load the frame but definitely a lot safer than relying on the loops when fiddling with the draw string ties.
