Baler drawbar

Changed the drawbar on the tractor back to the hook this morning after baling and I got wondering why can’t a baler have a wee bit longer drawbar and go on the hook?
Maybe a simple reason but got me beat for an answer!!

Pto angle is a big reason, on the longer drawbar the angle is shared more between the two joints.

I often wonder how they get on with balers on the continent with those ladder hitches if they have no pick up hitch? Ball and spoon I guess? I can see the utility of pulling say a round baler or trailed sprayer from above the PTO as the arms wouldn't then get involved with anything but a big baler is far far heavier?

When it’s on the clevis the pivot point is roughly half way between the uj’s giving the greatest turning angle. When you pivot the angle is split equally between both uj”s.
If it was on the hook 90% of the angle would be on the front UJ and you’d have reduced steering lock.

The ideal scenario of to remove the pto carrier on the baler and get a long wide angle pto coupled direct to flywheel and then mount it on the hook

So why isn't a muck spreader on the drawbar it works fine on the hook ?

Because you don’t really turn corners with a muckspreader.
If it’s on the hook with a plain pto shaft then there’s only a very small angle you should turn through
I'm maybe making too many assumptions that the OP is talking about a baler with a wide angle joint on .

I've always assumed that most balers are made in Europe so have a drawbar system suited to European tractors with a ladder hutch seeing as we in Britain are a minority in using the drop down hook and clevis.

My mate has a 960 JD and it's definitely on the pick up hook

Wide angle pto shaft means it doesn't matter where the pivot is.

Kuhn balers come ready to put on puh. I made my own for the mchale. Works perfectly.
Wide tyres and wheel widths might make it a but tight on my fendt baler for getting turned sharp across a hill to set bales out

Yes if it’s wide angle direct to flywheel then it should be on hook.

If it’s the older more common style with the hinged carrier on the drawbar then it must be on the clevis drawbar

It's mostly to do with pto angles, but also clearances when turning.
Are we talking about conventional, round or big square balers?
I know that in the case of a Fusion the whole drawbar is different if you have a ball and spoon coupling rather than the traditional drawbar and pin arrangement, it's not just a matter of changing the front section on the baler.

Got a kuhn on a hook, cant turn tight enough so run it on the drawbar. It tows terrible because of the movement between the pin and the fact it has no drawbar weight. Thought it sounded like a good idea at the time
