1st year of a ley. Will be mowing soon for silage.

At what point is that roughly ?
Usually we cut for haylage between the 20 th may and the 7 June, the later you go the more risk of some viable seed but it does work well. Usually we use westerwold for one year but have allowed it to seed last year so keeping it for a second year, looks good atm
 
I've seen a new ley that was drilled on the levels swamped out by blackgrass. Scary. I was told that some parts of the levels were amongst the first in the country to see properly resistant blackgrass originally? Makes sense given that it likes wet land.

Don't cut it untill it has set seed but that seed isn't viable it will die then if you cut too soon it will regrow and drop viable seed before you do second cut
If you wait for the optimal timing then it peas down for 2 weeks you are back to square one .
I would cut early if there was a break in the weather rather than chance it.
