Bloody hauliers ( again )

My loading hours are 7am-5pm all year round, at least 24hrs notice for loading and a call at least one hour before arrival. All made clear when selling grain to merchants.

No phone call, no load, that simple.
cant argue with that, communication is key!, still blows my mind why someone cant fu3king pick up a phone to say i will be with you in an hour, ive been delayed, ive had a load rejected, my wagon blew up...

if everyone one knows what's going on there's never any issue, its really not complicated.

Rejected for what reason?

Mind, there are some unscrupulous or rather daft farmers about who try to flog iffy grain but thankfully rare in my experience- I guess most people who grow any real tonnage of grain know the risks and spend their time monitoring it carefully.

I couldn't work at a mill and that looking out the window would be an endless row of trucks waiting to tip- would drive me nuts. Same as if I worked at the docks, I couldn't sit still knowing there were lots of trucks waiting to unload or be loaded, I'd be out there running a loading shovel myself if I had to.

I still to this day do not know how anyone makes money in bulk haulage- it's a dark art I just won't ever understand. Those truckers must have the patience of saints working in traffic all day, being given 20 minute slots to arrive in and all that jazz- it would drive me nuts.
Watch the video.
If I remember correctly (haven't re watched it) it was of very questionable quality and the farm that loaded it had testing equipment of their own.
I seem to recall when she gets to the alternate receiver, they do a second test because they couldn't believe how bad the first one was.

I may be mixed up with another video though.

Rejections currently..............
Protein, bugs and a lot of ergot. Problem is there is too much product about so mills can be fussy. Its certainly a dark art. The lorries compliment our commercial grain without that it would be pretty pointless. With a new lorry at circa £150k and trailer at £65k it needs to earn money.

That works both ways, the farmer could ring the haulage company too.

As a driver you rarely know exactly when you will be leaving until you leave and at that point you're driving and shouldn't be on the phone.
If you constantly rang round every time plans changed, you would get nothing done.

Haulage currently is on its knees. Last week 3 large bulk hauliers went bust. There is an awful lot of people without a clue having a go at the min. It is extremely tough. Our lorries currently are getting rejected 25% of the time. Try planning for that in a week. Its a nightmare. Tonight Bedford broken down and now we have lorries going in the opposite direction to a store to get tipped screwing tomorrows and Fridays plans.

If your still using a Bedford no wonder it's broken down, must be at least 50 years old, should be pensioned off and doing classic runs and shows only.

Only joking.

Why such a high percentage getting rejected?
My guess would be supply and demand, more supply can be more pickier less supply funnily enough goes straight through, my take but probably wrong.

Communication is key for all parties to minimise downtime in industries that are on wafer thin margins. And phone calls are cheap compared to anything else.

But, have you ever dealt with a Transport Company that won't allow the Driver to liase directly with you, the Farmer. That really gets me annoyed.... Bloody stupidness.

My guess is that the some people are either completely feckless and/or don't have the experience of the job (i.e. bulk grain or similar) to know that they can't just rock up at any time of day and get loaded- farms aren't quarries or supermarket distribution centres and even the poshest trucker satnav might not be that useful looking for a yard with no postcode.

Farm and bulk work is not for just anyone, you need drivers with some knowledge (and a fair bit of skill given how small or poorly laid out some yards are) and experience of farm work to realise how the whole game operates or else you are going to be rather surprised a lot of the time to find the gates are locked and there isn't a soul anywhere for 10 miles in any direction- that is how it is for some grain stores.

In the past when doing the grain store thing, I gave the drivers my own mobile number and they could whatsapp me asking what time I would be onsite tomorrow morning or are you still there if I sneak back late and need to get loaded in the dark? No problem if I know he is coming and the place has half decent lights around it.

If it's done right, they shouldn't have to really.
The haulier should have all required information from the shipper/receiver and should nowadays have real-time data on the truck's location, so they can communicate with customers. Scheduling and dispatch (might be the same person) should talk to customers.

Local buyer for distillery has stepped back from 2 not so local big boys to local guys. 12 if not 24hrs notice of movement, 11 loads off yesterday and today with good communication from both drivers including telling me moistures and specific weights. Far better than the fall from the sky mentality despite telling trader 12hrs notice.
