A friend of mine who operates a Krone Big M went down to the south of Ireland last summer to see this outfit in action, and hasn’t stoped talking about it since, he was blown away by both the mowers and the tractor.

Think them new mccorrmicks are pretty decent tractor. Would the pottinger with the augers not be better than the belts for durability?

I would price up a selection of parts and go from there.

What is it you cut with mowers over there and on what kind of land?
Rye,wheat, ryegrass, tritical, some alfalfa
Cereals grown for silage are dense and wet at mowing time usually
As far as what kind of land, anything from prime to undesirable.
Steep with rocks to rolling with gullies
River flats with the occasional blade eating surface stones
Limestone boulders that are small enough the to drag a seeder over but big enough to catch a cutterbar 😡
Mostly good land, but you get the idea
Also some wholecrop cereals ,this is where the mergers are used

What tractor is that? I'm not familiar with it?
I think it’s an X8 model, but not sure. I believe it’s run by a contractor in the south of Ireland who is also a McCormick dealer...I follow them on Facebook, they seem to have a fleet of McCormicks. There’s a nice few videos of the Pottinger mowers working on there site, seem to be some job. My mate went to look at it during the summer and was really impressed.

It’s Richard OShea , pottinger and mccormack dealer and he’s also a silage contractor. Sound man to deal with.

@Deerefarmer if spares are expensive you might want to throw a whole lot of spares you know you need put in the deal of a new one. A farmer I worked for did this with a carrot harvester. After running a few of them he knew what he needed and could get them spares for alot less that way.

Thanks all for the input

To clarify things a bit, our claas dealer provides superior service, stocks parts,no worries there. That is one of the biggest factors in changing brands, we have to order ahead and stock the current mowers parts on our shelves, not that big of a deal but we cover a fairly large area so having the peace of mind knowing the parts are on shelf at the dealer vs the factory distribution center several hundred miles away is very attractive.
From what I've gathered here no one has had any horror stories with claas mowers so we shall see what happens.
Thanks again

This is the first time I've ever heard anyone that's ever been working a big m say anything complimentary about any other sort of mowing rig. I'm not talking about the economics just their ability to do work
