Disinfectant in Organic

Hi all

Stepping up our biosecurity with boot washing in and out of our sheep fields (since we had scab!) but am going down rabbit holes with finding a permitted disinfectant as we're in organic conversion. The Welsh Organic Standards list the following ingredients as being permitted:

  • Potassium and sodium soap.
  •  Water and steam.
  •  Lime and milk of lime.
  •  Quicklime.
  •  Sodium hypochlorite.
  •  Caustic soda.
  •  Caustic potash.
  •  Hydrogen peroxide.
  •  Natural essences of plants.
  •  Citric, peracetic, formic, lactic, oxalic and acetic acid.
  •  Alcohol
  •  Nitric acid (dairy equipment)
  •  Phosphoric acid (dairy equipment)
  •  Formaldehyde
Cleaning and Disinfection Products for Teats and Milking Facilities.
 Sodium carbonate

Anyone advise on a good product for boot washing and disinfecting that ticks the boxes in terms of above ingredients for Organic. I bought 5L of FAM30 which contains iodine, sulphuric acid and phosphoric acid, but none of these are on the list! - so will have to go back.....

Thanks

Thanks yes, Exfarmer suggested Hypo and that seems to be used in dairy.... Sodium Hypochlorite is on the list so I'll track down a bottle. I wonder if my ag store does it...

If its for boot dipping and has no contact with livestock then something like virkon would be suitable.
It's a Defra approved disinfectant that we use on housing used for tb reactors. Never had an issue tbh in 25 years

My local ag store does a whole range of equestrian equipment, but not so much useful stuff. I just buy online instead:

The difficulty I have is with RT. The rules say you’re supposed to clean your grain store using a combined disinfectant/detergent. I bought one from Jennychem (a non DEFRA approved one, but then what is? 🤷‍♂️). Inspector looked at it, muttered something about that ‘they’ (RT? Organic?) don’t like the active ingredient QUAT, and she moved on.

Im genuinely puzzled by what disinfectant I’m supposed to use in grain stores. In the past I’ve used TFR, then thorough washing then oxsan detergent, but that didn’t comply with the rules because I wasn’t using a combined disinfectant/detergent.

Naturally when you question them (inspectors) they hide behind ‘Oh just use something from the Defra approved list’ (I don’t think there is one for this). Have ended up with non-compliance before and in stalemate with the certifying body. They say ‘Tell us how you intend to comply’, I say ‘Perfectly happy to comply-simply tell me ONE product I can use which will satisfy your rules and I’ll purchase it’.
Never heard back, but they passed us.

Confused.

The Quat ones are no longer used in dairies due to risk of contamination.
