Does anyone keep all their lambs back until the following spring?

When I look at the prices we get for the poorer lambs we sell in the following Spring through the mart. I just wondered if anyone kept all of their lambs until then to sell them? On grass/hay over Winter?

I haven't done any figures.

It just popped into my head as a thought. So please don't shoot me down automatically!

We generally keep them all. Although did sell 100 stores last November on a good trade. Am sure we are not fashionable doing it and will be losing money hand over fist according to some.

If you could collect data to find your lowerest proformance ewes (create lambs that are lease likely to be finished by end of summer) then cull the lowest 25% ewes would that free up capacity so you did not need to sell any lambs as store? Eg finish the slower growing lambs yourself the next spring.

Having more fields for hay each year to enable slower growing lambs to be kept over winter is likely to also help with worm control as the fields in hay will give clean fields the next year.

I’ve been contemplating keeping a few of the smaller lambs back , bit of a gamble as is any sale
We are tight for ground so I either bring them inside say November and feed them , hoping for a decent return, or get them away now 🤔
