The crop is in a lovely vegetative state at the moment.

It's just a different type of kale isn't it? I've tried forage rape and am still alive. Best make sure you haven't sprayed it with something though.

Will check harvest interval since the last spray. Might leave a corner unsprayed in the coming weeks.

I take a feed of the green bud stage - bit like Purple Sprouting Broccoli. With the larvae providing protein, it is a complete meal.

Looks delicious, going to try it at dinner time.

Can't find much online about eating it; if it's safe to eat in any quantity.

OSR is only a brassica. tastes the same as purple sprouting.
I have eaten stinging nettles in my youth. As long as they are boiled well the sting disappears, tastes like spinach. The problem is picking the stuff - need welding gloves.

Used to be quite common for a family of Asians to pull up, often in the stereotypical yellow Toyota, and ask if they could pick some rape heads when they were at the green bud stage.
I saw it as my contribution to inter-community relations.

'Cress' as purchased for salads is actually 80% OSR and 20% cress. Look at the label next time there is any left in the supermarket.

Primroses will soon be flowering. The petals are very palatable We ate handfuls on the way to primary school, and I used t be top of the class.

And flaked maize and cow cake. Uncle used to say cow cake would give us worms, but it didn't stop us.

I always suspected you were related to a sheep.

A west indian chap used to pick our rape when it was 8-10" tall, he bunched it up and sold it on.
It is a brassica so should be ok, he steamed his I think.
He cleared about half an acre one year, the great thing was that it grew back and we combined a crop of it also.
