I’d happily stump up for a couple (for Herts Show too and then have them back!) to stick on the farm driveway which is a major footpath and also roadside verge on entrance to our village.
This is the kind of idea I hoped this would spark ! Brilliant

If you want early access to the rest we have produced to do this let me know and I will email them you
PM sent.

We're on! (y)

James Williams from NHF has called me on behalf of the Herts Show committee confirming that they would like to accept the offer of the banners to use at the show. I'm sure we Hertfordshire TFF members can find plenty of very busy roadsides to use them along after the show as well.

:D

I'm happy to pay for 3 (around £45+VAT each) and @pear has offered. Who else from Hertfordshire will fund 1 or 2? I'm happy to organise it all. We can then share and rotate them between us afterwards.

Well done (y) There's so many county and regional shows on around the UK, there must be hundreds of people on here who are connected with their local one, would be great if they could follow your initiative.

Apart from the couple of playground spats, this has been a really useful thread.
As I see it, carbon can neither be created or destroyed, just modified into forming a range of solids or gases. These are in 2 main forms, “long term stored” such as coal and oil, and “temporary” such as in soil, and the atmosphere. This temporary state can be relatively quick to change, such as that in the soil, or locked up for a little longer in trees. Whilst trees lock up carbon until they rot or are burned, they must still produce some CO2 when leaves rot. Grass on the other hand may rot, or be grazed and therefore changes the carbons form again.
What nobody seems to be able to quote is whether an acre of trees or an acre of grass is more effective at storing carbon, but presumably there are too many variables to establish this, such as trees per acre and their size, likewise types and productivity of grasses.
Excellent post.
What’s made the big difference to the climate in recent decades is the release of the long term stored carbon rather than changes in farming which simply recycles the “temporary” carbon.

Where the plant based diet argument falls down is the amount of cultivation and inputs required for production, something never referred to by vegans.
The red meat industry likewise has a similar issue when it comes to intensive production where growing crops to feed animals to feed us is inefficient.
This is where the promotion of locally grown grass fed meat should be promoted, not only for making use of grassland but also providing much needed habitat.

Could someone on twitter, tweet these to shropshire council, as they were holding a climate change meeting yesterday, which got publicity on midlands today, with the usual teenage girl interviewed on the programme, who's first words blamed eating meat and dairy products.
I have shared on facebook.

looking into viability / logistics of making these into 4ft x 3ft all weather canvas banners - ideal size for a farm field gate or roadside localisation

if we could get them to circa £10 each plus postage would there be much interest ?

The first 3 have had big reach on social media, not just in the UK but they have traveled well globally - numbers well into the millions already. Bit by bit it's within all our power to make a difference to how farming is perceived by population

Keep sharing far and wide please !

I am sure that the NFU communications team for the midlands will have this morning been in touch with both Shropshire County Council and Midlands Today, and provided them with a mobile number so that 24/7 they can in future get hold of someone from the farming industry to provide input to such meetings.

I missed who it was on R4 You and Yours today, but there was a humungus amount of good sense in the interviews with an Oxfordshire farmer in the field, and a representative of farming in the studio.
Everything was explained clearly, no fuss, just simple statements of how things really are in terms of carbon sequestration in livestock farming, in the importance of livestock in the arable rotation, and the scientific work that's well underway in reducing methane emissions from cattle by attending to their diet.

Livestock farming as part of the solution was there as clear as a bell to someone listening while driving - which is what I was doing at the time. (y)

Didn't hear it, but if they were that good then the NFU and AHDB should be giving them a healthy retainer to be available as spokespeople for farming whenever the media need someone. Would be the best value for money of levy/ membership fees I can think of.
