Been offer some feilds of rape that a chap drill and has failed only about half to a 3rd has grown. He wants what's left grazed off before he drills wheat in the feild would it be safe to graze inlamb ewes on this. There is also volunteer barley which had been sprayed off and gone yellow? Thanks

We got a major bollocking one year for opening the wrong gate on keep. The following winter and ever since he actively puts 150 small lambs on his barley for a bit. That’s all going for wholecrop
Grazing combinables is something which will become more and more popular as chems are removed.

I've a mate who grazes all his cereals. No herbicide, reduced fungicide, no growth regulator and yields increase by 1/4-1/2t per ha.

There are reports of Romans grazing wheat fields, so there's nothing new under the sun.

Great grandad used too graze the parishes corn fields as he was the only one with sheep. Was in demand back then! As you say, nothing new and modern about it!!

We used to have an old fella (now long gone) back home that would graze all the cornfields in the parish too…. whether you liked it or not.🤐
I can’t remember what the term was but they used those woven hurdles too block up all the gaps in the laid hedges. I remember him talking about them when I was little. One of his favourite stories was he came back from his milk round and all his ewes had gone. He searched all over his farm and the neighbours that day. Just as he started milking that night the boy from 3 farms over called in too say his dad had sent the workmen too bring the sheep this morning while it’s hard. He would send them back when they had eaten the wheat off. 😂
