Hard winter on the way?

Most of the farmers clearing snow off the roads weren't paid to do so.
In our area, we had farmers, builders , accountants , shop owners , teachers abs even machinery sales people out clearing snow abs pulling people up hills in their 4x4. None of us got paid . We did it because we get great satisfaction from helping our friends and neighbours. Other than diesel at say £100 for the day? What were the other costs involved. ? Local builder had his 3cx type thing out with him driving it for three days Solid not getting paid. As Adam said . Some farmers on snow contracts acted like super hero’s on social media while 95% of other farmers just got on and helped out and kept quiet.

As a saintly ‘snow ploughing contractor’ to the council (said in the voice of Linda Snell) I’m delighted that they’ve upped the price above £40/hr, but somewhat dismayed they issued a tender application (at harvest time🤦‍♂️) that consists of about 300 ‘interesting’ questions:
-Are you involved in modern slavery?
-Are you involved in drugs trafficking?
-Have you ever participated in terrorist activities?
-Have you ever financed terrorism?
Etc, etc.

They keep asking if I’m going to fill it in, and I keep telling them to ‘just call me when it snows’.

Surely it's none of their business what you get up to in your spare time?

Even worse nowadays as a lot of cars have screw in tow eyes and no-one either knows where they are or don't have them at all.

As @GeorgeK says, I hate breaking a nail....

Also one really useful piece of kit would be set of 'universal' towing eye threads - like a socket or allen key set. One made in a six point 'star' shape would be too bulky but interchangeable threads for a universal eye would do. Dragons' Den here I come. (Scots accent:) 'Ok how many have you sold in the last year?' (me) 'er, 20; 10 to Halfords, 1 to China, 1 to India and the rest I sold to my parents and family' (Scots accent again) 'this isn't a business - and for that reason, I'm out!'

Joking apart, you would think with all the EU regs over straight bananas and bent cucumbers, some eurocrat would have legislated that vehicles manufactured or imported into the EU should have the same thread towing eye?

Frustrating when you try and help some grey haired little old lady who's had an off in her BMW M5 only to find that the tow hook ain't in her toolkit

edit: I must get back to work. I've just got a bollo*king from Mrs HK for overstaying my coffee break

Bureaucratic due diligence

The then 'leader' of the same 'Scottish Borders Council' was arrested and charged in 2002 for kerb crawling in the red light district of Edinburgh...

The cynic in me wonders if this tender hasn't been confused with the selection process to be a councillor: "she's ticked all the boxes for being an unscrupulous drug dealing sectarian pervert.
- So she'll fit right in at council headquarters!"

Much better to sit in the yard with the loading shovel and watch them get stuck.

Then you don’t have to worry about being a hero or insurance or offending anyone or anything else

My father used to recall towing lorries up the long steep hill out of our village up onto the wolds in the late 60’s early 70’s. He had a Muir Hill at the time and it was only just boss of the job with some of the bigger artics and he sometimes wondered where he would finish up when they sometimes started slipping back. Quite a few drivers offered nothing considering the risk and time involved, so he didn’t bother again.
