Harvest Traffic Report

You can usually get by a tractor and trailer quite easily unless several "None overtaking" drivers sit behind the tractor.

I have unfortunately sat behind two lorries overtaking each other for 5 to 10 miles many times - even when there are signs saying such is "illegal".

On our road I get sick of the dog walkers that drive up to the forestry to let their dog out for a dump.

They won't pull their cars off the road to let you past with a tractor and loaded trailer.

I just stop now and let them figure it out.

The problem seems to be more and more people using tractors for jobs that really should be done by trucks. Tractors with dump trailers, grain, slurry, silage etc all going for miles, some of the spud guys haul huge distances too. I'm not talking about short haul stuff, obviously that's tractor territory but as farms get bigger and more spread out journeys are getting longer.
These people are going to bugger it up for the farmers that just want to run tractors locally and not bother anyone.
Perhaps there needs to be sorter distance limits for tractor based haulage?

It interests me more that as soon as he got behind the tractor he felt the need to reset his trip.
I have a customer who used to drop vehicles off for service/repair and would reset the trip meter when they parked them on my yard, so when the repairs/service was done I would take it on a nice long road test and then reset the trip meter before they collected the vehicle, nothing was ever said as to whether the vehicle had been tested :D

Caravans and campervans never pull in. There has been many times here where I have been held up in a long queue of traffic and I’ve been in a tractor following slow cars/caravans/campervans, when people go into holiday mode they lose the ability to put the right foot down 🤦🏻‍♂️
im worried about the news of removing trailer tests due to the inevitable grockle-related carnage

Followed a large bailey trailer coming out of salisbury tonight, lovely trailer and driven perfectly well, however when he turned off into a yard the double indicators didnt really show distinctly from the tail lights, not the drivers fault obviously but a very poor design, I suspected he was going to turn so told my wife he was likely to, a normal car driver might not have noticed his indicators

Style over function....

Saw a car t'other day, the running light were an LED strip each side and the indicators could not be seen.... Dreadful design
New ag trailers seem to be the worse, looks like they drove through the local dealers spurious light section and everything that flashed got stuck on. Followed a new bale trailer that had flashing strobes either side of the number plate a foot from the indicators, from a couple of car lengths away you couldn’t tell what was flashing totally fecking stupid whoever at the manufacturer thought that was a good idea.

All brave giving you the finger when they know you won’t catch them on the next junction or lights toss pots
A friend of mine was break checked in his pick up by some boy racer. Mate had a load of cattle on. Yep youve guessed it next set of lights was on red. That ended up being unfortunate for the boy racer.

I cycle and drive agricultural vehicles. I always try to see the situation from both points of view. You get stupid cyclists and stupid tractor drivers. However I am always aware that I am far more vulnerable on a bike than a tractor. And remember, that annoying cyclist is someone’s brother/ father / son who would be greatly missed if you had to remove them from your tractor tyre with a pressure washer.

As for cycling races / events, they certainly aren’t that frequent around here, although I can understand the frustration being caught behind a peloton at a busy time of year.
There was going to be a one past my inlaws front gate but covid put paid to it.
They were stopping their businees for a day and feeding of their stock so a few lycra fetishists could have a jolly up.

Once was at a meeting where a talk was being given by ex traffic commissioner Mike (somebody), he was nfu advisor on traffic laws and I asked him about pulling in when on the road.
He said "you only pull in at a suitable layby/passing place if enough room to do so, you do not use bus stops, road ends or verges as driver doesn't know if verge is hard enough to support weight".
He also said if police stop you get out tractor before they come to you to save getting a fine for not wearing your seatbelt ;)
