I’m just started cutting barley is the quality okay with you’re malting barley?
Yes. No problems this year. Screenings fine, N levels low 1.3s. Just apart from the fact there's too much and they don't want out of contract barley at the moment.

Think our yield meter on combine was reading far too high! Emptying a shed and don't think we'll have near the tons i thought from combine.

That’s good for quality lexion yield meters can be very optimistic

Frustrating when your booking lorries on the back of it. Will post final yields once all payments are in and adjusted for moisture. Nowhere near 3.6 i posted this time last week!

Thought you were getting a bit carried away. We are about 3.25 for what has left the farm so far. Bit worrying if they are not taking spot loads already especially at good spec.

One of the big merchants sent email out today saying Scottish barley harvest across all regions between 15-25% above the 5 year mean.
Expect movement to take in excess of 3-4 weeks and don’t expect much of a market for over contract tonnage. They will take it if you want but will be unable to price it at this stage.

Thinking of putting the whole farm in OSR for next year. Will need to be quick but can’t see malting contracts being very attractive next year

Did anyone else get told by merchants before this harvest, no need for contracts spot will be about £185!?

I know several guys who followed this advice and have no contracts for malting barley and no home for it.

No, but have some on an open price contract which will be little better I fear.
