JCB 520-50

One has come up for sale over here, pretty tidy looking and with 9,000hrs.

I've run 3CX's in the past and known other people running them and know that to them 9,000hrs is nothing.

Anyone here with experience of the 520's and do they have the same sort of robustness and longevity?

Thanks.

Oh, it's described as year 2000 if that's relevant.

We had one from new in 1996 until 2008, I don't remember how many hours it had when it left.

Early in its life it damaged its hubs, we suspected at the time it was due to leaving the factory with no or not enough oil in the hubs and was covered under warranty.

I don't remember any other major issues

One here just ticked 10,000 hours, used every single day. Nothing other than routine maintenance bits been done but she's ready for a major overhaul now. Bushes on job and steering etc and engine will probably be gone through aswell.

I sold a 3CX with almost 10,000hrs on it and the engine was as sweet as when I bought it with just over 5,000.

Do you think the engine on yours is needing attention at 10,000?

Not mine personally but the machine at work.

Breaths heavy now. Just a case of nursing it really. Such a handy machine round the yard, be lost without it. JCB sent the supposed replacement a few year ago to try it. Not a patch on the 520.

Boss man keep looking for another to buy to keep it going but they hold there money well. Have a brand new cab on the shed though from when JCB had the sale at Cecilly Mills when it went for building.

Yes, they do hold their money well but I can't see that situation changing other than tidy ones possibly getting even dearer?

I don't have a huge amount of work for it but it'd be a long term keeper and going by the photos anyway it looks a tidy one.

Guess I'll have to go for a look see and take it from there.

Thanks.(y)

One problem we would have is dropping on second hand attachments, not many tool carrier users about getting.

Had one at the firm I used to work for. (Plant hire/groundworks and quarry).

It did go out on hire from time to time.

But spent most of it's time in the quarry/yard and was used Daily. It was mega handy and punched well above it's weight.

Actually, smaller still would be even better sometimes but the 520 is still pretty handy and absolutely knocks spots off any of the smaller stuff in both lift height and weight.
Small stuff is dear for what you get but know a farm that had a 520 50 (I think)on a year 2000 ish and it was abused for around 15 years and stood it pretty well tbh

The 40 has the full depth door whereas with the 50 you have to go up and over.

But as a good mate says, when you're buying second hand you can only get what God sends you,

................and in this case it's a 50.

When all's said and done it would lift a lot more and a lot higher than the tractor loader I have now, and I manage OK with that, although height wise it's sometimes marginal.

So it'll comfortably cope with all I need and be that bit handier about the yard too.
