So I might have sort of accidentally bought a colchester student mk1...

It has a 3 jaw chuck, a 3 sided quick change tool post (I think), and a dead centre with a sort of scoop taken of it, and a couple of face plates. Can anyone recommend where to find basic tooling eg- chuck for tailstock, tools for the tool post etc.

Compound is also very stiff and looks to be gummed up with swarf, so looks like it might be a dismantling job.

This largely completes my knowledge of all things lathe related...

eBay and marketplace for Secondhand chucks and tooling. Look for older stuff but good brands. Cutwell are great for tooling and inserts. Buy the chunkiest boring bar that you can get away with, parting off tool and general purpose tool holder. All these really want to have replaceable inserts. Cutwell will keep you right. You are really limited without a 4 jaw chuck so just have to keep looking for a high quality one Secondhand..

Well done, brilliant little lathe. Fendtbro has a point about a 4 jaw chuck if you want to do precision stuff but 3 jaw is good enough while you're getting used to it.
If you take your time all the other tools will turn up on eBay eventually

For general turning get a WNMG insert tool, get a good quality one Kennametal or similar, the beauty of WNMG inserts is that you should get 6 lives out of one insert, all inserts are expensive if you get decent quality ones.
Also get some HSS lathe tool blanks the 1/2" ones then you can grind your own tools for special jobs.
Should be able to find lathe tools, boring bars etc on ebay etc if you keep a watch out and wait long enough.
Any lathe related questions ask here - https://colchesterlathe.groups.io/g/main

I almost certainly don't need to buy this, but if I did, what should I look out for?

I haven't used a mill since school, and even then that was basic stuff and this looks a bit fancy, and probably doesn't work...

You need to “ feel” the machine, check its smooth on its ways with no play , then run it up and listen for quiet running, check powered axis if it has them

I'd be surprised if there's much wrong with that one - particularly if you only want it for odds and sods rather than regular high precision work. There's still a lot of spares around so if there were any issues you can usually get it sorted fairly easy. If it was nearer & I had the means to shift it in time...
