It must be interesting having a few students from different parts of the planet.I know Africa is a huge country but I would imagine their agriculture is almost completely unsubsidised, of course I may be incorrect, perhaps @Lowland1 , may be able to comment.
Yes - ours tend to be mostly from the Southern African countries, and I believe they are pretty much unsubsidised. Often the farm sizes are mindblowing.

In Kenya they give out subsidised fertiliser at times to small farmers and mates of the government. There is cereals board that sets a minimum price for maize but that's it. Other than that there's no subsidies, tax free fuel or anything other advantages to being a farmer. We pay VAT but can't claim it back. There really aren't many commercial farmers but hundreds of thousands of subsistence and small farmers.
