Time and again we are threatened with legislation if we don’t take voluntary measures. We should be saying we won’t comply with legislation if they try it on. What are they going to do? Lock us all up? When will these clowns learn that enough is enough?

Where do you draw the line though and what would you like to see gone, other than RT, which seems to be the thing that winds people up the most?

We get the politicians we deserve.
Fact is, most farmers aren't that fussed. They only pay their subs so as to get access to discounts on the next 4x4.
They make all the right noises on here, but as soon as you give them a specific thing they could do that would take all of 5 minutes, nope you can forget it. I have tried several times, the number of people who actually lift a finger is the square root of sweet fa.
Not hungry enough.
And that’s the truth there are no true statesmen just politicians whose job is to be elected. Few go into it for the betterment of their fellow countrymen if you stick it out long enough and make it high enough there will be a directorship somewhere in the city for you. But nobody will vote for an honest politician because no one wants to know if they want a better health service it might cost them more tax money or if you want less pollution you can’t go on holiday to Spain or if you want affordable housing we will have to concrete all of the Home Counties or if you want Grandad to make it to next year then you have to accept you will be out of a job and possibly may never work again. All the big things like a Health Service or a Road Network or Free schooling have been done we’ve just got a gang of ex solicitors and social workers looking for something to do.

My take is that the election cycle is shorter term than many farmers' rotations, and they are only thinking as far as the next election, so short termism rules. It is even worse in stock market quoted companies worried about the next quarter results and the effect on stock price.

I've said on here before that farmers let themselves get "bullied" too often.

No independent testing of milk samples, Dairies having totally one sided contracts etc. "Officials" turn up on the farm unannounced, and they get spoken to You can't just wander into your local Council Offices and demand to see the Chief Executive without an appointment, can you?

A classic example of this scenerio is the TV licence issue ( To watch bbc basically) if you refuse to submit and purchase a licence the bailiffs can enter your property & remove items to cover the alleged debt, all with the blessing of our elected officers.

Is that correct?
I know reading social media can be dangerous but there are plenty who claim not to have paid a tv licence in years, that the tv detector people have no right of entry and encourage others to do likewise.
According to some they only get away with charging for a tv licence because most people are prepared to comply.
As I say, all according to some random strangers on tinternet

I was thinking about this sort of stuff just the other day. It occurred to me that we are probably still suffering from the genetic effects of 2 world wars in the 20th century. We lost well over a million young men in those two, and they would be among the best people society had to offer at the time. Taking that amount of quality people out of the gene pool has to have an effect on the quality of future generations. We have been governed by the Post War generation since the 90s, and its noticeable that the quality of governance has dropped significantly in that time. Thatcher was a pre-war child, Major born in wartime, and Blair was born in the 50s. If the quality at the very top is declining, it will be the same down throughout society.

OK, Boomer :joyful:

Dat is, like, deeply tactful, innit. :wacky:

If you asked any normal person in the street. Whether they would be complaining if they had to firstly fill out a few forms each year to continue to live the way they have previously. Then say 95% of you can now fill out some more forms and get a fairly sizeable chq just in time for Christmas.
What do you think they would say......
If you don’t like then....

License fee avoidance is about to change from criminal to civil but the BBC can apply to the magistrates for you to pay up. Refusal would entitle bailiffs to enter your property and take goods to the value of the fee - currently £157.50. In reality, bailiffs take more than that as stuff is auctioned so they need to ensure all costs are covered

If everyone refused to pay, it would be anarchy :pompous:

I think the point is that you only get to the point of being fined for not having a licence if you basically admit it to one of the 'inspectors' (who are basically salesmen - if you don't have a licence and you agree to buy one there and then they go away happy) on the doorstep. They have no legal powers at all, they can only enter your house if you let them.

I haven't had a licence for over a decade since broadband allowed me to watch what I liked on catchup on my PC, I get the threatening letters all the time, which help light the log burner, and once years ago some TV Licencing chap turned up and I told him I didn't need a licence and he left. Not seen anyone since.

For example carbon credits and audits. We should just refuse point blank to do it as an industry. What could they do about it?
But no, certain people are only too willing to ingratiate themselves and drag us all down. I have never seen an industry so weakly and meekly lead as farming.
It is not the responsibility of the UK agricultural industry to offset the carbon released by the billions of tonnes of fossil fuel extracted and the millions of acres of woodland felled each year around the world. There is barely enough carbon capture capacity to offset the carbon released in food production, we can not be not the carbon sink option for the rest of the economy.

I'm not a boomer, I'm a Gen X'er. According to the online dictionary Generation X is 'the generation born after that of the baby boomers (roughly from the early 1960s to late 1970s), typically perceived to be disaffected and directionless.', which sounds about right for me :D

Ditto. That's a shockingly accurate perception of me, too :D
