Rarely remove straw (only if we can swap for muck)

Fresh wheat, barley or oat straw all as bad as each orher for hairpin especially when shallow seed depth, all seem better after a bit of time / weather but you sometimes don't get that with OSR due to drilling date

I find the 750a can and has grown good (2t/ac) OSR crops drilled into chopped wheat but it's not as consistent

I'm told OSR after oats simply will not grow ? And I seem to have worse yields after barley than wheat from experience so far
I think I'd take the straw away to remove the risk. You appear to be putting plenty back in to justify its removal.
I'm happy with my OSR after WW, could be better but that's an issue outside of my control and will learn from the experience.
I think my osr went in two weeks after the WW came off so no real time for anything to break down.

I wonder whether it's possible to DD OSR at all. I've used standard Duetts for planting OSR before direct into stubble but it doesn't work very well as you don't move enough soil when going shallow to properly cover the seed with crumbs. I was planning to run the Duetts through once first cultivating, then follow it up with the drill pass.
DD osr after S barley through chopped straw with companions, Horsch CO4 narrow Dutch Industries points. It can be done

What following harrow tines are people using for pimped horsches?

I have a co4 with metcalfe points, no front packer, no covering discs, tractor tyre packer and then a single row of straight double harrow tines which I haven't moved from when they were set to run between the rows.

I think there must be some improvements to be made in slot covering, particularly for shallow drilling, by either moving the existing tines so the double tines straddle the slot, or replacing with an accord lazy Z type tine. Any thoughts / experiences?

Many thanks

Thanks - I was just trying some vetch and clover mix on some fallow in some fairly well baked clay the other day (before the rains) and the slots / scratches were left open in places. It was quite shallow there wasn't a great deal of material for the harrow tines to push back over the slot, which got me wondering.

and points.............

basically I wasn't happy with the prototype we had made, its needs more thought / work and Im short of time right now so we have bought some Metcalfe points that we are adding fert tubes to

Just tacked into place in these pics but I think it should work ok, the pipe position is adjustable via the grub screw

I still think I can improve on this design though and will revisit making our own point when we have time this winter, I'm going to try removing the tungsten on a few Metcalfe points and replacing with the Ferobide tips I have so I can compare wear rates this autumn

Just taking a look at putting fert pipes on some Metcalfe points.
How did this setup go?
I was thinking the fert needed to go in before the seed so it was underneath. The logistics of this is a fair bit more involved than tacking the pipe on behind the seed tube and wondering if it makes any agronomic difference?

Fert is essential in my onion for consistent no till especially on OSR and spring crops - I didn't get on too well wit the Metscalf points so made my own which improved a few aspects - we added the fert pipes ourselves, just a simple pipe down the rear of the coulter

Moving to Borgualt VOS points on this drill now, they seem a much better solution

These mods give us the option of another 2 hoppers on the front linkage in addition to the seed / liquid fert cart it already uses

Also the seed cart can be dropped out completely so the CO tows direct behind the tractor fed from the 2 product front hopper - this makes it more user friendly when you don’t need the seed volume of the seed cart (student proof !) for stuff like osr and cover crops

It also gives us a lightweight well balanced option which might be handy if we ever get another 2012 type session or late winter beans etc
