New Red Tractor rules for 1st Nov

The welfare concerns for this policy are regarding the restriction of voluntary movement and limitation of expression of the cows’ natural behaviour.

If you put a person tied to a table with a laptop and provided them with all the food and water they needed, can't say there is much quality of life, because not all needs are met physically and socially. Same goes for animals.

Arguing that tethering a animal at a show for a few days is the same as over a whole winter is a bit of a thin argument.

I can’t see the problem of having them tied up for milking or route vet procedures; surely that’s not included.

that is not included. its only referring to tethering while housed the whole day, which doesn't allow an animal any free movement or social interaction with other animals.

tethering for shows, vet visits etc. is fine.
They may well be teathered all day at a show if they don't have a class

So tethering at home for a few days is fine then, to argue against it would be a bit thin

I had all the queries in my head about shows and tethering for vet treatment etc but when I read the full consultation doc before submitting my comments it made clear that these are excluded. You, all, I assume, submitted a response to the consultation if you are only just reading about tethering?

It is the tethered housing that is not, but they are taking the softly softly approach to that to start with.

Responding to the consultation made sod all difference. I responded and fed in plenty via NFU but they just steam rollers their ideas through oblivious of what RT members wanted.
Worse than being in Sicily 😡

when I was young we had dairy cows all chained by the neck in the winter and they were all let out to exercise while the stalls were cleaned, when the doors were opened after they all rushed in and went to their own stall, they seemed quite happy with the arrangement
