nitrogen application

I'm spreading double top ASAP on winter barley.

Think the sulphur is very important early (I might be wrong)

Was thinking this year, with all the mildew it would have been better to use Suphur sprayed on with coarse nozzles & spread urea for N????
I was told , don’t put the sulphur on until March . Any research done on it.

Yes. I've posted the nutrient needs of wheat and osr throughout the season occasionally, but if you can only apply sulphur once, it ought to be sooner rather than later.

Here's the nutrient demand graph for osr too. Sulphur is critical for flower development so some is needed in the next month or so. Don't forget that sulphur leaches more readily than nitrogen but if you've applied a big dose of FYM or have high soil organic matter you'll have some left. Tissue testing would help if you're not sure.

Been out and about putting salt on the stubble coming beet land. It's mostly firm but it's cheesy on top due to frost lift and not drying so won't be going in amongst the rape or wheat yet. Still feels a bit cold and early for N here. No real Spring growth in the rape yet.

I saw in irish farm journal a blend of can and urea, sold by yara.

I think this is a good idea, as spreading risk somewhat. Anybody using it?

Only issue i can see is spreading with different sized prills.

This product is called SuperStart and is actually a blend of Calcium Nitrate (not CAN) and Urea but is only available in Ireland

After everything said, I have been on all the wheat today with a little something. Never travelled so well in February before, in fact I don’t think I’ve ever tried in the middle of February before .
Reasons being that the crops are moving and Last year, early fed crops did well, despite the drought .
Main concern is another drought if fields are this dry now, although anything can happen yet .

The N Min results I have had back have not shown there to be much N in the soil at all. It may not have leached much over winter, but judging by the state of the crops I would say they have just carried on taking it up!

yep, our early fertilised crops did far better yrs ago but then they always did, was just that I listened to the cr---p put out by the enviromentalist driven advice for a few years until the figures proved to me here that they where talking ba---lcks re profitability, im thinking that is a reason why despite improvement in breeding chem mech etc yields have plateaued

Started today on the rape.finish it tommorow then on to barley and late wheat and do the rest next week.Thinking of going for a fairly high dose(90kg/n)as i am getting concerned about the lack of rainfall and I have a felling we could be in for another 76 this year

You could be right, dad keeps on about 75 and 76, drought in 75 and worse drought in 76.
